Republican elites are very concerned this year that Donald Trump can not beat Hillary Clinton or Socialist Bernie Sanders in a general election.
You hear the establishment types talk about it almost every day on the FOX News Channel.
For his part, Donald Trump says he has not even started on hitting the Clintons.
But, back in December, Donald Trump took a few swipes at Hillary Clinton after she said he was sexist.
Hillarys polling numbers immediately tanked. Hillarys lead dropped nearly 13 points in the first week of January via Real Clear Politics.
Back in March 1980 the establishment the establishment said the same thing about Ronald Reagan. They said he could never defeat Jimmy Carter. He was too divisive.

Can't really compare calendar dates to calendar dates across years.
One poll had it 60% - 31%!

The point here is that during the election year Reagan was way down in the polls.
Yep... and Carter’s approval ratings steadily tanked from there, due to the cratering economy and the ongoing Iran hostage situation. Reagan was masterful at overcoming prevailing media narratives about his being “dangerous.” Plus... the demographics of the country were far more favorable to a GOP challenger than now.
We better switch our votes to Bush.
Has Ronnie disavowed the KKK yet?
And he’s divorced and remarried too. Ewwwwwwwwwwww!
1980 was different...running against a unpopular incumbent president.
Trump certainly will have nothing to lose by throwing every available brick at Hillary. The media will cover for her like never before, but maybe something will stick.
Carter’s ratings were only that high because people rallied around the president in the immediate aftermath of the Iran hostage taking. As time dragged on and Carter proved himself ineffective and pathetic in face of the ongoing crisis, his numbers fell sharply.
Maybe Trump can go 24/7 on Her Infernal Malevolence in late October and stress her into a major stroke.
What an awful shame that’d be... ;-)
... in a much more homogenous and conservative America.
Not to worry. Trump said on Hannity last night that a poll came out just yesterday showing him beating Hillary. So there must be a super secret poll that he sees because Donald wouldn’t just make up something like that.
The difference here is that Reagan was a Conservative.
The article is talking about primaries, the head-to-head as our illustrious likes to call it, not the general.
Though even your point of running against an unpopular President still applies as the Republican will be running against an Obama third term.
Since Trump announced his candidacy all of the anti-Trump people have been screaming at the top of their lungs that Trump will fail, people will wake up, he’s not a conservative, he’s dangerous - yet he still keeps winning.
He took on the media and the entire GOP and Democrat party apparatus and he is winning the Republican primary. Why do you think he can’t win against in unconvicted traitorous criminal like Hillary Clinton?
I guarantee you if he wins the Republican primary he is going to decimate Hillary. I will bet that when he wins the presidency all the anti-Trump people will say they were for him the whole time.
1980 was different...running against a unpopular incumbent president. You're right it was different because today our otherwise unpopular president has been made MORE popular thanks to numbskull Republicans propping him up.
But Carter was unpopular and running for reelection. People were looking to toss him out on his ear, head, backside, or whatever part—I preferred face myself—landed first. That situation is not the case today.
Interestingly at this aimilar point in the cycle, back then, the eminent George Will was advocating for Baker and Bush using in part the electability argument, FWIW...
The pundits who consider matchup polls flung far into the future to be important are either idiots or anti-Trump.
No people love Obama and Clinton. I suspect Obama-Clinton is just as bad as Carter except the press is hiding it.
