Seeing that the Drug Cartel can buy at will fully automatic weapons on the black market it is laughable that they need to buy civilian nerfed models in the US and smuggle them through the border.
Far more likely of a scenario is setting up the Fed with evidence to enable a wholesale assault on free citizens 2nd amendment gun rights by “finding” a number of American guns in cartel hsnds, then tracing the serial numbers to border gun shops. The “National Security “ concern is that citizens might learn of a wide scale multi-departmental act of treason against the Constitutional rights of its citizens.
The Obama administration has been riddled with such instances of left-wing zealots using government agencies as means of pursuing their political agenda, e.g. Lois Lerner.
