2 votes apiece for GOP voters in coveted Ohio; only 1 counts
WHIO ^ | 3/4/2016 | Julie Carr Symthe

The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio — Every Republican primary voter in Ohio will have two opportunities to vote for president, in a ballot twist that only escalates the potential confusion caused by the party's large and fractious field of candidates.

GOP ballots for the March 15 primary feature two boxes for president: one for designating an at-large presidential delegate and one for designating a district delegate. It's a carry-over from a time when Ohio's Republican vote was divided proportionally, rather than in the winner-take-all fashion being used in 2016.

The two boxes raise obvious questions: Do voters get two votes? Can conflicted voters split their vote, or do votes for two candidates cancel each other out? If only one of the two boxes is filled in, does the person's vote still count?Ohio never changed a requirement that both boxes be listed, and the secretary of state's office says both will also tallied.

But the Ohio Republican Party says only one will count."Because there are two pathways to selecting delegates to represent Ohio at the convention, voters must vote twice — once for the congressional district delegate and once for delegate at-large," said party spokeswoman Brittany Warner. "The votes that will be counted to determine the results are the delegates at-large."

We have such genius running the party. Now I understand why we can’t elect an outsider - there’s no way he/she could understand the (no doubt) important complexities required to run the government properly.

Every ballot will show all candidates who filed papers. Candidates cannot be removed once papers are filed

This is the way it has been for a very long time

Ohio lists a different random order of candidates in each precint. I was surprised by the the alphabetical order for the first block.

If I'm reading that mess correctly and understand what's being said, it shouldn't create that big a problem. The very first choice a voter makes is for delegate-at-large, and the candidates are clearly listed. They're also clearly listed for the second one.

Are they saying the second one won't be counted? If it is counted, would it disqualify a vote which wasn't the same in both cases? That would create a problem.

One problem in some states is early voting and mail-in ballots that have already been returned A lot of votes have been thrown away on candidates no longer in the running. It's another reason why early voting should not happen.

In the Kentucky primary on Saturday, there were votes counted for Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Carly, and the rest. They were still on the ballot.

There is nothing confusing about that. It says vote in each box. A person doing so will get their vote correctly counted for the at-large position.

I suppose some people could skip the first box, and just vote the 2nd. Why? Why would you ever do that?
