U.S. employers added a robust 242,000 workers in February as retailers, restaurants and health care providers drove another solid month for the resilient American job market.
Retailers, restaurants and health care providers drove another solid month for the resilient American job market. The unemployment rate held steady at a low 4.9 percent.
The Labor Department on Friday also revised up its estimated job growth for December and January by a combined 30,000. Over the past three months, U.S. employers have added a strong 228,000 to their payrolls.
The pickup in job gains shows that the U.S. economy has weathered a global economic slowdown without suffering much blowback. Worker pay did slip last month after having picked up in January. But more Americans who had been sitting on the sidelines began searching for jobs last month and found them.
Employers expect solid consumer demand in the months ahead even though the stock market has turned turbulent, oil prices have hurt energy industry jobs and a stronger dollar has reduced export sales.
Retailers added 54,900 jobs last month. Restaurants and bars added 40,200. The health care sector hired 38,100.

It is amazing things are so wonderful, I would never have realized. Sarc.
4.9 percent. Wow.
Who are you going to believe, the government or your lying eyes?
Have not subscribed to the PG in many years.
Nice to see they can still sling it.
Odungonomics
You can picture this guy shouting “Comrades!” before reading this swill.
A robust economy? LOL.
On the same day economist Jim Rogers writing over on Bloomberg Business says that there is 100% chance of recession this year.
All indicators from what I have been watching is we are going in the dumper as per 2007-2008. During an election year this would be good for the GOP especially if Trump is the nominee. Gee whiz I wonder if I should root for a recession and watch them “eat” their “robust economy words.”
Boy we are in a mess for sure.
4.9% unemployment is total bullsht!
Unemployment is actually about 28%. Most of the new employed are part time workers.
I hate liars.
RE: Most of the new employed are part time workers.
That COUNTS in the unemployment stats as “employed”.
All these are factory jobs? Ladies and gentlemen - service jobs - unless you are in the medical profession - pay sheeet.
A crock of sh## and those who eat it most are his brothers and sistas who see color only.
Wages are dropping like a rock
Labor participating at all time high.
A Romney economy everything is bankrupt
If the economy gets any better I’m gonna be in the poor house!................
Wasn’t anything less than 300,000 new jobs in a month under GWB considered an economic catastrophe?
Happy days are here again!!
I’m so glad only 95 million people are out of work. I was afraid that things were bad.
Nearly all of these ‘jobs’ also require no college degree, and as you said are lower paying service sector jobs. Manufacturing in the US is still in decline-——http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-03-04/over-80-jobs-added-january-were-minimum-wage-earners
There were at least 20 workers hard at work behind the IN-N-OUT burger counter the other day, and the line of customers at noon went out the door into the parking lot. If the company could add a few million more locations, we would have full employment in America!
/mild sarcasm
No, really, it’s a great company and their hamburgers are the best!
