Establishment Republicans are reckoning with something they thought would never happen: That it might soon be too late to stop Donald Trump.
With the controversial businessman the clear front-runner heading into Nevada and next week's Super Tuesday contests, there's an emerging consensus that the odds of dislodging him are growing longer by the day. Whispered fears that Trump could become the Republican nominee have given way to a din of resigned conventional wisdom - with top party officials and strategists openly wondering what the path to defeating him will be.
"If anyone else in this field had gone second-first-first in the first three contests, we would all be saying that it's over," said Mike DuHaime, a former Republican National Committee political director who guided Chris Christie's presidential bid.
"I think it's uphill, and Washington underestimates how uphill it is - and that's because they've persistently underestimated Trump," said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who sought the Republican nomination in 2012. If he wins Nevada, Gingrich added, "What is it that's supposed to stop him?"

Poor GOPe twits.
GOPe sees their end is near!
Go Trump!
The GOPe are working for the DNC operatives with “R”s by their names.
They are only there to keep conservatives in check.
The Cheap Labor Express is in full panic mode now.
Their options for blocking us from electing a President who would enforce the laws and borders are shrinking.
The Memorizer Bunny seems to be the only shot they have.
Well soon the party will be over for these quislings. I cannot wait.
An interesting mind exercise:
So, let us insert Cruz for Trump in the above article. How much different it would be. Almost imperceptible.
The rest of the pack, nobody really wants. Rubio and Kaisich are nominally growing because there is nowhere else for the squishy types to go. Bush and the rest of the RINO’s are gone.
The Memorizer Bunny seems to be the only shot they have.
Yep. Let’s hope when the chips are down, which will be very soon, enough Cruz/Carson supporters can get behind Trump to beat RubiOS.
They are screwed. The would rather have Trump than Cruz, but the only one who can defeat Trump is Cruz, and only if if Rubio were to drop out or lose support (via a smear campaign like they did to Cruz or wall to wall coverage of his amnesty/Gang of 8 lies). But since they would rather have Trump than Cruz, that’s not an option. And if Cruz leaves the race (not that he will), most of his voters will go to Trump. Rubio has no chance either way. Poor GOPe: it’s Trump or Cruz.
They’ve decided to settle for Trump/Rubio, IMO. Cruz is not an option for them, as he’s already proven he’ll stick to his principles and that his loyalty is to the American people not the GOPe party and ruling class.
If not Rubio...they’ll give their $$$ to Hillary...count on it.
I’m sure Congress GOPe are already trying to figure out how they can either buy him or blackmail him. I don’t know if he can be bought or not, but I don’t think that he can be blackmailed, just because he already hadn’t pretended to being the traditional kind of candidate with “gravitas”, and all his dirty laundry has been out here already, because he was a businessman, not a career politician, and that kind of thing doesn’t hurt private businessmen. It would have to be something off-the-charts bad, like selling weapons to ISIS, which of course he hasn’t done, which may be more than can be said of some politicians. Also, I’ll bet he has “stuff” on almost anyone of them who attacks, or access to getting it, and they pretend to having that “gravitas” and pure integrity to which he never
pretended, so it would hurt them in a way in which he can’t be hurt.
God posts.
Trump is business as usual.
No threat to the establishment.
They are freaking out and soiling their diapers in every corner of the interweb.
And I have not had so much fun watching something since Keith Olbermann stopped having nightly cranial explosions on my television.
Erratum
Good post. (Not God posts).
Trump is business as usual.
No threat to the establishment.
You are reading way too much in to this.
Trump is no threat and not a revolutionary.
They don’t like it much, they have to deal with the slow kid who is one of them a bit more than they’d like.
That’s all.
Agreed!
Don’t ever discount the possibility that the RINO’s in their desperation will find a way to side with Hillary or Bernie just to keep their place at the Brie and Chablis parties in Georgetown. They have sold the country down the Potomac before for much smaller honorariums.
The fact that the left sees him as a “nightmare” is all I need to convince me we need to vote for him.
I am STILL hoping for some sort of Trump/Cruz coalition, I think that even Trump could see that would be beneficial and could announce it as kind of a self-check and balance.
Because if you only listen to those who agree with you, you never learn anything new
The donors will for sure because all they want is influence.
I haven’t discounted the possibility, I never do. The globalists have all the power and influence, and any day we could wake up to headlines of “DEAD PROSTITUTE FOUND IN HOTEL ROOM” if they get desperate enough.
Just keeping my fingers crossed things hold out.
