US, Russia agree to ceasefire in Syria

The United States and Russia agreed Monday to a ceasefire in Syria that is scheduled to take effect Saturday.

"I am gratified to see the final arrangements concluded today for a cessation of hostilities in Syria and call on all parties to accept and fully comply with its terms," Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement. "If implemented and adhered to, this cessation will not only lead to a decline in violence, but also continue to expand the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian supplies to besieged areas and support a political transition to a government that is responsive to the desires of the Syrian people."

In a joint statement Monday, the United States and Russia said officials from the two countries will lead a United Nations task force to enforce the ceasefire and work on mechanisms to monitor compliance.

"To achieve this goal and to promote an effective and sustainable cessation of hostilities, the Russian Federation and the United States will establish a communication hotline and, if necessary and appropriate, a working group to exchange relevant information after the cessation of hostilities has gone into effect," the statement says.

The Syrian regime and opposition groups now have until noon Friday to agree to the terms of the ceasefire.

Under the agreement, both sides would have to stop seeking more territory, allow humanitarian aid to pass through controlled areas, only use "proportionate" force in self-defense and work to release detainees, particularly women and children.

Regime and Russian forces would have to stop airstrikes against opposition groups that the United States and Russia confirm are parties to the agreement.

A temporary cease fire before the big game....

I guess Russia wants to rest their troops before Saudi Arabia launches a full scale attack into Iraq while Turkey simultaneously launches from the North Iraq in a pincer move to recapture the supply lines ISIS lost to Russian Air Strikes and Syrian/Iraqi ground forces.

There is a certain insanity in that headline.

It's like "Joe and Ted agree to Fred now liking pea soup."

"The agreement announced Monday does not apply to airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), al Qaeda's Syrian affiliate al Nusra or other U.N.-designated terrorist groups, according to the statement."

I'm confused. Who are we against and who is Russia against ?

Wasn’t a cease fire already agreed to starting this week? What happened to that one or are we supposed to have forgotten it?

I'm confused. Who are we against and who is Russia against ?

Russia is against Muslims who burn people alive in cages, chop off Christian heads for being Christians, and throw homosexuals off of buildings.

Obama is against Russia.

I hope the Russians will use the five remaining days as aggressively as possible, dropping most of the bombs and firing most of the missiles that they have in that theater. As much as I despise Assad, everyone else is worse. I want him to take back his country and rule it with an iron fist for decades to come - long after Obama is gone and we have recovered from all the damage inflicted by out tyrannical big government socialist.

"..support a political transition to a government that is responsive to the desires of the Syrian people."

If my ROFL copter wasn't in the shop, I'd be flying it at top speed right about now.

Kerry truly is a foggy bottomed fool. Or a liar. Or both.

Don’t see anything in there that prevents Russia from heavily fortifying all the Turkish border crossings to prevent an invasion.

Would Turkey and SA really be dumb enough to attack right into a group of Armata tanks??

John Kerry is a total idiot. I thought Hillary was the worst SoS ever, but this horse faced traitor is close to being even worse. ....Liberals live by relying on their feelings instead of a lick of common sense or logic.

Yep. I think he got three little minor nicks that were handled with Band-Aids so he could get back home after only about 4 months in VN playing sailor. What a POS!
