You really need at least three. Ten times that is better though. Rifle, shotgun, and pistol.
“So what drives people to own guns?”
Because we can. :-)
Three is nowhere near enough. You need a pistol and a rifle in .22LR and in a larger caliber. Add a shotgun, and you're already at five, even before you get to the different purposes of various handguns or rifles.
And the rest of the story ...
After the war the firearms were rounded up and, rather than sent back to their generous benefactors, were dumped in the Channel.
Ask King George
I remember an old Tv show, (Quincy M.E.) in which a .25 cal pistol escapes and begins to kill people. Jack Klugman yells...”WE’VE GOT TO STOP ‘IT’ BEFORE ‘IT’ KILLS AGAIN!”
Then there was THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO in which a woman buys a .25 cal handgun, “IT” escapes and begins to kill people. “IT” is later caught and melted down into a sewer cover.
***The guns do not cause the deaths it is the people who cause them.***
They knew this two thousand years ago.
“A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer’s hand.” - Lucius Annaeus Seneca
The Brits know this as well but they have gone temporarily insane!
The human race is screwed, because there is no way the voting populace will remember anything beyond about 40-50 years. So we are hopelessly doomed in repeating the same mistakes over and over about every other generation, imho.
How sad to see the BBC to have fallen so far. Two blatant lies in the first two sentences.
1. There are not 300-350 million registered firearms. I doubt if even 50 million are “registered” in the United States, only a few states require registration. In some it is illegal. The best estimate is about 400 million total modern firearms in the United States
http://gunwatch.blogspot.com/2015/09/us-will-reach-400-million-private.html
2. There are not 14,000 firearms homicides in the United States. The number is less than 9,000. The FBI says 8,874 for 2014, and the number has been falling.
The BBC used to have a reputation for believeability. Was it all a lie from the begining?
Almost all of them. Very few stranger related murders.
More than you think:

And reasonable people don’t want to be part of that 14K.
I had one of each until that tragic boating accident. One day I’ll replace tbem.
I carry a gun cause
a cop
is too Heavy!
gosh,
what do You think?
/s
LOL!
LOL!
Do the Brits EVER stop thinking about my guns?
Most gun deaths are suicides. 19,392 in the U.S. in 2010, per Harvard Magazine article *here*. So if they're right, there are more people killing themselves, killing each other in criminal gang activity, or killed by police- including witnesses against police misconduct- than otherwise.
And if potential victims were armed, some, possibly many murder-suicides and spree murders would simply be justifiable homicides.
You forgot to add “I want a gun because a cop is to heavy to carry (too many donuts).
