To say that “Iraq was a mistake” indicates a lack of foresight into whether the risks would have been worth the reward. However, the Bush administration did not assume the risk of the Obama administration’s being next in line. IS there any way of knowing what the situation would be (or not be) today, had a Republican been elected in 2008?

Hey Mr Cruz defender.. you seem to be having fun slamming Trump for stating the Iraq war was a huge disaster with all your cute CODE PINK photos,,

let’s see Cruz get up there next time and debate Trump about how great an idea it was to invade Iraq and how he’d be ready to do the exact same thing if he were President because Bush was such a great role model of how to use US foreign policy in the Middle East.. then see how far he gets in the election

btw if you are for invading Iran(because they are close to getting a bomb) proclaim it,, if not you are the same as CODE PINK and the FAR LEFT.. see how that silly thing works?

The chief reason we should try our best to avoid fights is because our leaders insist on losing them or giving away any gains we make. If we only could elect sensible ( and loyal American) leaders!! Not seeking wars but not being afraid to win either. Whatever we decide to fight for, we should at least try to win, damnit. ( And illegal immigrant Enemy agents do not make winning CiC’s )

Trump was saying Iraq WMD’s were a threat a year before the Gulf War

The Iraq war is not front and center in the voter’s minds right now. I’m not certain what Trump is doing here. To say if we don’t admit it was a mistake we’ll lose the election? It’s not an election issue. Why does he want to make it one, and, such a pivotal one?

First off, who does he want to admit this assertion? The RNC? George Bush? Jeb? General Petraeus? This of course won’t happen, so what does he gain but Code Pink types who won’t vote for him anyway...

The real problems facing us are enormous, frightening and already deeply divisive. Why does he want to add one that further divides?

Please. That’s the outcome of Obama’s negligence.

It is the outcome of not defending the war, and trying to establish democracy in the middle east, which can only fail. The Bush team's incompetence is what led to Obama and our current situation.

Bush said it. He said a couple of times that there were no WMDs. Since he justified the war on WDM’s, admitting that WDM’s did not exist in Iraq, was an admission that the war was in error. At the same time, Cheney claims there were WDM’s.

The war was not a mistake. Pulling out was.

From the day it began I felt that it was W’s attempt to put a permanent US base in the heart of an unstable area. And then Obama removed us. THAT is what made it a failure. It should have been as permanent as our military presence in Germany and Japan.

The one thing Bush did that I agreed with was the Iraq war.

I don’t know how much of an election issue this will be but he is definitely getting the attention of a lot of people that see Iraq as the first thing they agree with Trump on this campaign.

I think you could make a good argument that Obama’s various “springs” did more to destabilize the Middle East. Add to that his determination to remove sanctions from Iran and you have a recipe for disaster.

I do not understand how Trump thinks apologies for the war in Iraq is going to be the thing that makes a Republican candidate electable. I do think it's another Trump effort to garner free publicity. Anything to keep his name in the news and his face on TV

“Because America doesn’t know how to win anymore.”

Are you FKN kidding me?

Iraq was won, WON up until the point US troops were removed in 2009. There was no ISIS, Al-Qaeda-in-Iraq (aka ISIS) was in exile in Syria, Baghdad was secure. When I departed Baghdad in July 2007 there had been 7 attacks across all of Iraq the prior week and no Coalition casualties.

Up until 2009 Iraq was won, it was stable and secure.

Then the Dems cut off OCO funding in the 2007 budget forcing the US withdrawal.

Iraq went to HELL when the US had to pull out due to Dems’ and the media’s treachery.

Iraq wasn’t lost. It was won, then thrown to the wolves for the sake of Democratic party optics and budgetary greed. They lost it because they didn’t want it won. EVERYONE knew what would happen if the US pulled out. And the Dem Congress MANDATED withdrawal by cutting funding for the US to stay.

The US military won the Iraq war. The Democratic party and the liberal MSM lost Iraq and allowed ISIS to achieve regional strength. They own it.

Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq.

We keep winning the wars and losing the peace.

And it does not matter if it is a Republican or a Democrat in charge.

Time for a change.

Agree which he has by saying we should have not left once we committed.

In Reversal, Obama Says U.S. Soldiers Will Stay in Afghanistan to 2017

Obama still stuck in wishful thinking on Afghanistan

The actions of the democrats and liberals when things did not go as planned was treasonous.

They gave W everything he asked for the war, and they got the TSA feel up grannies union.

I call that even.

Actually Ted would be arguing that we shouldn’t have abandoned Iraq after already spending such blood and treasure securing it. That it doesn’t really matter why the decision was made after the fact. We did it. We made a commitment and needed to follow through. And that our abandoning it lead to ISIS, massive blood shed and spreading chaos. That’s the simple truth.

And don’t give me that crap that they asked us to leave. We fought a war there and paid the price to set the terms - period. The Japanese didn’t get to tell us when we had to go nor the Germans.
