Info from here. |
|
Jedh Colby Barker (June 20, 1945 September 21, 1967) was a United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Vietnam War in September 1967. |
Jedh Barker was born on June 20, 1945, in Franklin, New Hampshire. At the age of six, he moved with his parents to Park Ridge, New Jersey, where he graduated from grammar school in 1960, and from Park Ridge High School in 1964, where he was captain of the football and baseball teams. He attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, East Rutherford, New Jersey, and then Missouri State College, Kirksville, Missouri, until May 1966. On June 20, 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He was a member of the Special Volunteer Reserve, 1st Marine Corps District, New York, New York, until discharged to enlist in the regular Marine Corps on October 5, 1966. After completion of recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, in December 1966, he underwent individual combat training and weapons special training with the 2nd Infantry Training Battalion, 1st Infantry Training Regiment, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was promoted to private first class, December 1, 1966, while undergoing individual combat training. In March 1967, PFC Barker joined Marine Air Base Squadron 21, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, San Francisco, California, and served as group guard until the following June. Reassigned as a machine gunner with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. He was promoted to lance corporal on September 1, 1967. While on Operation Kingfisher southeast of Con Thien near Phu Oc, the Battalion that morning was ambushed by regiments of the 324B Division. Barker was killed in action on September 21, 1967, while on patrol. The Medal of Honor was presented to Barker's family by Vice President Spiro Agnew in ceremonies held on October 31, 1969. PFC Barker was buried at the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, New Jersey.

The President of the United States in the name of the Congress takes pride in presenting the MEDAL OF HONOR posthumously to LANCE CORPORAL JEDH C. BARKER UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following CITATION: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a machine gunner with Company F, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Third Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 September 1967. During a reconnaissance operation near Con Thien, Corporal Barker's squad was suddenly hit by enemy sniper fire. The squad immediately deployed to a combat formation and advanced to a strongly fortified enemy position, when it was again struck by small arms and automatic weapons fire, sustaining numerous casualties. Although wounded by the initial burst of fire, Corporal Barker boldly remained in the open, delivering a devastating volume of accurate fire on the numerically superior force. The enemy was intent upon annihilating the small Marine force and, realizing that Corporal Barker was a threat to their position, directed the preponderance of their fire on his position. He was again wounded, this time in the right hand, which prevented him from operating his vitally needed machine gun. Suddenly, and without warning, an enemy grenade landed in the midst of the few surviving Marines. Unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Corporal Barker threw himself upon the deadly grenade, absorbing with his own body the full and tremendous force of the explosion. In a final act of bravery, he crawled to the side of a wounded comrade and administered first aid before succumbing to his grievous wounds. His bold initiative, intrepid fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death undoubtedly saved his comrades from further injury or possible death and reflected great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. /S/RICHARD M. NIXON |

A Widowâs Choice
February 15, 2016
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.
Psalm 34:18
When a good friend suddenly lost her husband to a heart attack, we grieved with her. As a counselor, she had comforted many others. Now, after 40 years of marriage, she faced the unwelcome prospect of returning to an empty house at the end of each day.
In the midst of her grief, our friend leaned on the One who "is close to the brokenhearted." As God walked with her through her pain, she told us she would choose to "wear the label widow proudly," because she felt it was the label God had given her.
All grief is personal, and others may grieve differently than she does. Her response doesn't diminish her grief or make her home less empty. Yet it reminds us that even in the midst of our worst sorrows, our sovereign and loving God can be trusted.
Our heavenly Father suffered a profound separation of His own. As Jesus hung on the cross He cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matt. 27:46). Yet He endured the pain and separation of crucifixion for our sins out of love for us!
He understands! And because "the Lord is close to the brokenhearted" (Ps. 34:18), we find the comfort we need. He is near.
Dear heavenly Father, as we think about the sadness that comes from the death of a loved one, help us to cling to You and trust Your love and goodness. Thank You for being close to our broken hearts.

God shares in our sorrow.
In the superscription of Psalm 34, a song of David, we are told that it was written "when he pretended to be insane before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left." That event is recorded in 1 Samuel 21:13. In fleeing from Saul, David sought refuge in the city of Gath--the hometown of the warrior Goliath who David had killed in battle. When the people of Gath protested David's presence in their city, he pretended to be insane in order to escape. It may seem that David escaped by his own cleverness, but he clearly gives God the credit for his rescue.

It is SO cold today in New England Today that:
1. I woke up to freezing air blowing into the kitchen from the door of the CLOTHES DRYER! It seems the wind had forced open the dryer vent and was coming through the lint filter INTO the house.
2. The pipes in the kitchen faucet had frozen. Since I have no tools or hairdryers or space heaters, or anything else like that, I emptied out the cabinets, exposing the pipes, and tried to warm them up by pouring microwaved water down the adjacent drains. Luckily I got to the pipes before they burst.
3. I wore a woolly scarf over my mouth and nose while walking the dog, but the water vapor in my breath steamed up my glasses, and instantly FROZE into a frosty, opaque, icy casing on the lenses, making it impossible to see.
4. Lynn-Dah almost refused to take her walk (which she usually LOVES). She just did her business, put on the dog-brakes and demanded we go home.
I suppose this is normal for you, but it will take a while for me to acclimate.
My Dad taught me Arctic Survival when I was a little girl. I know how to build a shelter, and burrow down into the snow to survive.
I really hope it doesn’t come to THAT! LOL!

Since I have no TV, and FR was a bit slow today, and it was too cold to go out, I stayed indoors and taught myself a fairly accurate rhythm guitar accompaniment to the Pink Floyd song , “Time”.
LOTS of chords. It took a while to get it right.

WOW! Have you had quite the day!!
Congratulations on getting to the pipes before any burst.
Now you have to add the dryer door to your late night rounds and make sure it will stay closed. Very smart attack on the drains.
The main reason I don’t like glasses is the fogging and icing.
I sure hope you don’t have to survive in a snow cave.
