Obama urges Russia to stop bombing 'moderate' Syria rebels

President Barack Obama urged Russia on Sunday [Feb. 14, 2016] to stop bombing "moderate" rebels in Syria in support of its ally Bashar al-Assad, a campaign seen in the West as a major obstacle to latest efforts to end the war.

Major powers agreed on Friday to a limited cessation of hostilities in Syria but the deal does not take effect until the end of this week and was not signed by any warring parties - the Damascus government and numerous rebel factions fighting it.

Russian bombing raids directed at rebel groups are meanwhile helping the Syrian army to achieve what could be its biggest victory of the war in the battle for Aleppo, the country's largest city and commercial hub before the conflict.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin and Obama had agreed to intensify cooperation to implement the agreement on Syria struck in Munich.

After a phone call between Putin and Obama, the Kremlin said both gave a "positive valuation" to the Munich meeting.

The Kremlin statement made clear Russia was committed to its campaign against Islamic State and "other terroristic organizations", an indication that it would also be targeting groups in western Syria where jihadists such as al Qaeda are fighting Assad in close proximity to rebels deemed moderate by the West.

Russia says the "cessation" does not apply to its air strikes, which have shifted the balance of power toward Assad.

From another source:

A senior Iraqi security official who wanted to remain anonymous told Fars News on Saturday that they have "compelling evidence that a US helicopter landed in Albu Arim palms of Fallujah city to take out the ISIL leaders who were in contact with the Americans."

He added that there was more American aircraft flying over the region, probably to protect the airplane which was boarding the ISIL leaders. The security official is certain that the US saved the ISIL leaders from possible attacks by the Iraqi Army and security forces.

Spokesman of Iraq's Kata'ib Hezbollah (Hezbollah Battalions) forces Jafar al-Hosseini disclosed already last October that captured ISIL leaders have acknowledged receiving logistical backup and intelligence support from the US. ISIL commanders who were captured have confessed that the US supports the terrorist groups, Al-Hosseini told Fars news Agency.

He continues with the fact that the US has provided the ISIL with intelligence about the Iraqi forces, their positions and targets. Iraqi officials have on many different occasions witnessed how the US and its allies supply the ISIL in Syria with arms, ammunition and food under the pretext of fighting the Takfiri terrorist group.

According to him the Iraqi forces found a lot of TOW-II missiles from the Takfiri terrorists in al-Karama city of Fallujah. The missiles were brand new and the ISIL had transferred them to Fallujah to use them against the Iraqi army's armored units.

Also in February 2015, a senior lawmaker disclosed that Iraq's army has shot down two British planes carrying weapons for the ISIL terrorists in Al-Anbar province. The same month the Iraqi forces discovered US-made military hardware and ammunition from terrorists in Beiji.

"The Iraqi Parliament's National Security and Defense Committee has access to the photos of both planes that are British and have crashed while they were carrying weapons for the ISIL," Head of the committee Hakem al-Zameli said.

Coordinator of Iraqi forces Jafar al-Jaberi said that that US planes have dropped weapons for the ISIL terrorists in the areas under ISIL control and even in those areas that have been recently liberated from the ISIL control to encourage the terrorists to return to those places.

In January 2015 another senior Iraqi legislator stated that the US-led coalition is the main cause of ISIL's survival in Iraq. He said the coalition's support for the ISIL is now evident to everyone.

Jome Divan, who is member of the al-Sadr bloc in the Iraqi parliament, said that "the international coalition is only an excuse for protecting the ISIL and helping the terrorist group with equipment and weapons.

There are no moderate rebels.

There never have been.

McCain, Graham and Rubio met with and armed jihadists.

If the Vast Right Wing revolted in the USA, how would Obama feel about bombing them? Assad may be an Arab SOB, but considering who is trying to topple him, I would think that Assad “is” the Moderate. He was elected president and is the official Government of Syria. Who started this mess? The Moderate ISIS?

They are all al Qaeda or al Qaeda affiliates or friends.

Damndest thing in the world that we’re funding the enemy we went there to fight. And the people who wanted to go fight them are the very people who want to fund them....Bush, Obama, McCain, et al.

I thought that there was no such thing as "moderate" rebels because they are terrorists who kill Christians. Do we not already have two factions funded by the USA fighting one another? Does that not seem rather foolish?

I would think that the USA could deal with the Assad issue after they help him defeat the terrorists. Assad does not kill Christians.

Rhetoric aside, Russia is only aggravating the situation.

Russia has 2 main goals: 1) bring Europe to its knees, and 2) help Iran consolidate its power over the Middle East.

By bombing sunnies in Syria, this only increases the sunni refugees pouring into Europe. Make lives impossible for the sunnies in Syria (which will happen after none of the sunni islamists are viable) and let shiites reign supreme. Sunnies will migrate to Europe in even larger numbers, bringing Europe down with their terrorism. Furthermore, shittes will be taking over Syria and Northern Middle East, paving a way for Iran to take charge.

Urine-laced feces is as much disgusting as feces-laden urine. So, don’t rejoice the destruction of sunni terrorism for shiite terrorism is as bad. Islamic terrorism is not going to go away. Russia has picked the shiite-flavor feces.

This is a Russia-Iran game to destroy the Arabs, Europe, and the Western hegemony in general. Morons like Trump are signing praises of pootin and want to deal “better” with Iran. Morons.

Yes, and even the Kurds are Muslim.

I will always remember W's words when he told us on top of that pile of rubble, which were the remains of the twin towers, that we would get them [the Muslims] fighting among themselves. Wow, was he ever right about that - but at what cost. One cost of which is we now have a Muslim president, who is returning the favor.

France is urging the Turks to stop attacking the Kurds which is what their attacks are all about right now.

The truth is the 'planned' invasion of the West by Muslim hordes was long underway, prior to Russia bombing ISIS. In fact it was the West, in starting this mess in the first place, which created most of the desolation and refugees in that part of the world - all in furtherance of some 'master plan' of world domination by Islam - (see muslim brotherhood).

The United States has issued 680,000 green cards to immigrants of Muslim-majority countries, according to data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) [within the last five years]

That's what they're saying, but many say the real reason is because ISIS is now surrounded and Turkey is doing this to reestablish supply lines to the remaining ISIS forces in Aleppo.

The line of control is the Euphrates river ... Raqqa lies to the east of the river in the US controlled zone.

Then this story is from an Iranian source (Fars News), perhaps the same source which claimed that the Saudis who are being beaten by the Houthis (and like the Iraqis, abandoning their tanks & guns in place) will be sending 150,000 mercenaries to help the Turks.

I watched a video of Houthi fighters attacking a Saudi outpost. They walked right up to the outpost, unopposed, and shot the Saudis dead while they tried to hide or run from a sandal footed, ragtag band of Houthi cutthroats.
