Two Baton Rouge police officers who were shot early Saturday during a confrontation with a suspect are hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr. said he believed the officers' injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. The suspect is undergoing surgery at the same area hospital.
"Everything is still preliminary, and we're still working the scene," Dabadie said. He did not release the names of the officers or the suspect.
The suspect's godsister identified him as Calvin Smith, 22, CBS Baton Rouge affiliate WAFB-TV reports. Gina Chambers told WAFB-TV that Smith has a history of mental illness and had been staying in a mental health facility in Shreveport until a week before Christmas.

How does someone with a history of mental illness get a gun? Maybe the better idea for decreasing gun deaths is to keep the mentally ill in the hospital.

Fortunately neither officer sustained serious injury. One was grazed in the head, and the other took a shot to the stomach but was wearing a bullet proof vest. Both expected to realize full recoveries.

But. . .do we really want the government to take the word of some mind doc that you are ‘crazy,’ and therefore unable to own a firearm?
Easy to imagine the dems making it a law that you need a note from a mind-doc saying you are mentally fit to own a firearm. . .and then it is easy to imagine the dems saying the mere desire to own a firearm is an indication of mental illness and therefore you can’t own one.
Does the lack of description provide us with a good description of the criminal?
