Devaluation of the US dollar has a lot to do with that. I purchased a 4" S&W 686+ in 1999 for $437 in San Diego. The going price on Buds gunshop (online) is $715 now. The Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle retailed for $439 in 1999. It's $799 today. I'm quoting discount street prices for current prices, not MSRP.

Buds has the Ruger SuperRedhawk 7.5" 44Mag for $832 today.
