The exact opinion that has so coarsened our society.

You should call that the Trump Doctrine.

If saying, “Hey you, Dick.” is OK

but saying , “Hey, you Dick.” is profane,

then society is terminally PC Correct, anyway.

No, intent matters, and most people are smart enough to understand context.

What if there is no intent? Or any contextual intent?

Lenny Bruce got arrested in the 60’s for saying ‘ass’ and ‘balls’, nothing else, just that.

Could a person not knowing anything about Bruce or his act, infer anything from what he said?

i.e jawbone of an ass, a stack of cannon balls.

Or what about a sign posted outside a broadcast studio listing the 7 Dirty Words that you’re not allowed on the air?

You can print and post them in public, but you can’t say them?

Or how about mistaken context, i.e. balls to the wall.

Most recently it was used by fighter pilots in WWII for ‘full throttle or power”. But it actually dates back to the days of James Watt’s steam engine.

But many people today think it means something different, i.e. profane, to use the latest buzzword. Of course even profane in this context is somewhat iffy, since it primarily used in a religious context.

Or what about the word ‘niggardily’?

People have lost their jobs for using the word in public, because some people thought it has a racial context. But it actually dates from the 1300’s in Middle English and means stingy.

Or what about English words that are dirty in other languages? What would they think your intent was?

Hint: Don’t tell a person from Sweden that “You’re speeding.” Or someone from Korea to “Have some Salsa.”

So your assertion is essentially that because words are just noises, vulgarities cannot exist.

Broken down, you assert that if one suspends their common sense and ignores what a person is obviously intending to say, then a vulgarity is not a vulgarity. And further, you assert that if there is any plausible deniability, then it cannot be a vulgarity.

Put into practice, this means that a man leering at girl is ok saying, “Do you have a nice pussy? I really like pussys. Can I see your pussy.” is not at all vulgar, because had he said, “Hey look pussy willow is growing in the pond.” it would have been Ok, and further, the little girl is to blame for having a dirty mind, because the man could have been a cat lover.

So that is it. Instead of just saying that you don’t care that Trump said a vulgarity, or saying that you prefer he hadn’t, you have to manufacture a total BS line of reasoning to support the premise that nothing the man says can be faulted.

And you wonder why people question the attitude and nature of support that Trump supporters are showing.

No, I’m saying vulgarities are in the ear of the beholder. If that person doesn’t know it’s a vulgarity, or doesn’t think it’s a vulgarity, then it’s not.

If the girl in your example were holding a small cat, then no one would have a second thought about what was being said.

Times change, mores change. And words change.

Take the word ‘gay’. “Don we now our gay apparel” has a entirely different meaning now than when the song was written.

Everything changes, society included.

Take the way people dress for example. People 150 years ago would be horrified at the way the average person dresses today.

Even men’s bathing suits, not just women’s, would be scandalous.

Much to the contrary, only a fool would conclude that the man was unaware of the vulgar connotation of the word, and was in fact using it with that intent, regardless of plausible deniability.

I'm 50 and as a child I knew well to avoid the word. Indeed I've never met anyone younger than 60 that would refer to a cat as a pussy or refer to small kindling as a fagot.

ARe you stating that Trump is too dull to know what everyone else does? I don't think so.
