A Vallejo man, Richmond police officer and active community member was fatally shot at his home in the Glen Cove neighborhood early Thursday.
Vallejo police said Augustine âGusâ Vegas, 58, was killed after being shot multiple times inside the house.
Vegas was a 15-year veteran with the Richmond Police Department, and last served in the regulatory unit.
The suspect, identified as Robert Vega, 30, of Fairfield, has been taken into custody and is the father of Vegasâ 6-year-old grandson.
The shooting was reported by a family member at 4:39 a.m. in the unit block of Narragansett Court at the victimâs house, police said Thursday.
Following the shooting, Vega took his young son and fled the scene. Fairfield police officers were able to locate both the suspect and the child at a local residence.
The child was unharmed, police said, and was taken into protective custody by law enforcement officials.
Vegas was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

So the fact that he was a cop really doesn’t appear to have a bearing on the murder. But he sounds like the kind of cop every town needs; prayers for the family.
True... it was his profession that connected him to the community.
I am very sorry that you lost your old friend, it seems he was a very good guy. I will pray for him and for his family.
Thanks. I hadn’t been in contact with him for decades, but by all accounts, he was quite a stand-up guy.
He became a cop at age 43???
He actually became a cop at age 33 after graduating from the police academy in 1991. He was with the Richmond PD for 15 years, but I’m not sure where he served from 1991-2001.
Hey, Scott...so very sad about this!
I grew up in the Bay Area, South Bay, Silicon Valley...funny how we have more stuff in common...
Always tried to avoid the East Bay Area, even back then, but went boating a lot in the Delta. Joined the Navy on the Big E so got to know Alameda pretty well...
Oakland is and always has been a cess pool...all cops there should walk away from there while they still can....
So sad to see a Good Guy taken in this way...many prayers.
And, if I tracked the story right, he was shot by his son? Maybe over custody of the grandson?
Truly heart breaking on all levels....
Thanks very much! I grew up in Vallejo and moved north in ‘72. Gus was a year behind me in school. Good guy then and now.. sad for his family.
Gus was shot by his daughter’s boyfriend who was the father of the baby.
The similarity of names (Vegas/Vega) was entirely coincidental.
I’m a ‘71 grad from a high school in Silicon Valley...just got a notice our 45th reunion is on...ugh!
How do you feel about traveling 3000 miles to see people who remember you with zits, with as much fat as you have now, with no clue whatsoever, and never going to prom...oh, fun.
One of the guys I graduated with was a local cop after grad then went rogue and, I heard, died in a shoot out after robbing a bunch of banks.
Way different story.....
How’d you land in Hampton Roads?
I feel the same way.. Folks change so much over the years! I landed here when I was assigned at Langley AFB in 1995. It’s a great location!
I was born in Richmond waaaaaaaaaay back when, father/mother moved us to Santa Clara County just in time for Computer Age there. I joined the USN to get out of CA, met hubs in DC, got out to follow him then convinced my yank to settle here in retirement. Almost built in your neck of the woods so know how nice it is.
Interesting to connect with another CAer who got out & settled here...
Even with this frrrrrrrrrrreezing weather! Cheers!
Funny, I remember riding or driving by Richmond in my younger days, but I don’t believe I’ve ever actually been in that city. I do remember all the pill-shaped refinery facilities that dotted the foothills over there.
I joined the AF to get outta Cali too!
Sorry, I meant Richmond VA...
But I do remember some of the not-so neato sights of Richmond CA...
Really avoided the East Bay, if I could.
Though a favorite memory was riding on the then 17 Freeway, through Oakland, past the bread-making factory...the Smell !!! Yum....
All gone now....
Prayers for his family.Sorry to hear about your friend Scott ((((Hugs))))
