Sen. John Cornyn, a former Texas judge and attorney general, is a devoted believer in the criminal justice overhaul awaiting its moment in the Senate. Now, he just has to convert doubting Republican colleagues.
Cornyn, the No. 2 Senate Republican and a main author of the criminal justice legislation, which would cut some sentences and ease re-entry after prison, is working to address fears from fellow Republicans that passage of the bill could set loose some dangerous offenders and diminish the party's law-and-order image.

Cornelio needs to go. He is an integral member of the DC uniparty.
Cornelio = Cornholio.
If Obama likes the proposal there’s definitely a problem with it.
So now we know what he's been doing with his time instead of trying to find ways to stop Obama's agenda and cut back government.
Funny how we don’t hear anything about Cornhole doing anything for his constituents in Texas to stop the Mexican invasion and Obama’s amnesty.
I’m not a Cornyn fan but he’s right on this one. We imprison more people than any other country on earth. All the people who are in prison for doing (not dealing) drugs should be in a forced re-hab stint. Its cheaper than prison and more effective. We are clogging the prisons with non violent white collar criminals and drug addicts that could be rehabilitated or punished on the outside.
I agree but Cornyn still sucks in absolutely everything he does. I think our “war” on drugs is bested only by our “war” on poverty in the gubmint failures department.
Yes Cornyn does suck. Even a blind squirrel gets an acorn once in awhile. LOL!
Oh, he’s doing something alright. He’s cooking up a plan to let them out of prison.
Recreational drugs punish their users.
I don’t think the government needs to add to the punishment for simple usage that is not a danger to others.
The war on drugs needs to go the way of alcohol prohibition.
People should be able to sell/buy the less dangerous forms for each brain chemical system, say:
1. a cocaine/cola beverage for the dopamine system
2. variably colored codeine beverages for the opioid receptor system(green: non-lethal for novices, yellow: likely to harm novices, red: sure to kill novices)
Rehab except for alcohol is normally a failure.
Addiction to recreational drugs is generally for a lifetime.
Not true. Sometimes it takes more than once but rehab works. There is actually a small number of hard core lifetime drug users. Putting them in prison does nothing to cure the addiction.
I do not agree that we can effectively rehab a drug addict. Wasted money.
Federal law needs to be changed so any doctor or physician assistant can renew buprenorphine-naloxone prescriptions.
The combination works well for many people and needs to be readily available.
Amen!
Well no offense but ignorance of the facts is not an excuse. It happens every day. :-)
Have worked in the area of substance abuse since 1985 and have seen a whole lot of patients come through treatment programs across several states during that time. Success rate is less than 5%. Treatment for alcohol abuse and addiction success rate is a whole lot better. My opinion and some facts - spending tax dollars to treat drug addicts is a waste of money.
Taking drugs is now viewed as a recreational activity. Change the culture and maybe you will increase the success rate. Government’s answer is to throw more money at a problem without addressing the root causes in our communities. Designed to fail.
Thank you for that information. My niece works with them as well and it’s shocking to hear how much money is spent on a drug addict who turns around and does it again and again, only to return to the facility months later and it’s repeated all over again. She expressed that they often times spend upwards of 50k to save the poor soul.
Nonetheless, I wonder why he’s spending so much time and effort on this when other issues seem far more pressing. Guess we all have our priorities.
