I don’t think that qualifies as “changing his name”. Ted is a common diminutive for Edward - like Bobby for Robert, Dick for Richard, etc. Choosing to go by his middle name rather than a nickname is not any big deal, especially if the nickname caused him to be teased.
His father thought he, at age 13, had rejected him and his heritage. It seems logical to me.
