David Cameron’s Mum Joins the Fight Against Tory Cuts

Here’s something unexpected.

David Cameron's own mother has signed a petition which hopes to stop Conservative cuts to 'essential services'.

Mary, 81, has put her name down on a 38 Degrees petition calling for the end to Oxfordshire County Council plans to close 44 children's centres in the area.

The Conservative-run council is hoping to save around £8million plans through the closure of centres described in the petition as ‘a lifeline to new parents who rely on locally accessible advice and support at a time when it is most needed.’

Mary, a retired magistrate, told the Mirror: 'My name is on the petition but I don't want to discuss this any further.'

Jill Huish, who runs the campaign backed by Mary, said her signature 'shows how deep austerity is cutting.'

'Even David Cameron's mum has had enough,' she said.

Though local authorities in England have had their government funding cut by 40 per cent since Mr Cameron took office, the Prime Minister has been at loggerheads with Oxfordshire County Council leader Ian Hudspeth over the proposed reduction in financial support for museums, libraries and day centres for the elderly.

Mr Hudspeth told the PM that these same cuts were a result of the government's key manifesto pledge to reduce the deficit.

It seems that this isn't the first time the Prime Minister's mother has refused to let family get in the way of principle.

During her 30 years as a magistrate, she passed judgment on a number of Greenham Common protesters – including her own sister.

I'm surprised they would let a magistrate preside over a family member.
