Nah, I’m 55, and I remember Malcolm X. Or at least, I remember him well enough to know he was killed by black Muslims.
The problem is that these kids are going on the version of Malcolm X presented in high school text books, which is all, “poor Malcolm tormented by the white people.”
Eldest son wanted to know where some of his friends were getting some of their crazier ideas, so I used a standard text with my two older kids to show them what their contemporaries were being taught, and the whole Civil Rights Era chapter was one of the strongest examples of slanted reporting in the thing. Half the time I could add one sentence to each section that would entirely disprove the thing — for instance, the fact that Malcolm was eventually killed by black Muslims made the whole section on the guy look just bizarre, in a “but how do you get from here to there?” sort of way.
