Endorsements used to mean the candidate had access to the local party machine and ground game. Bush 41 gave John Sununu the Chief of State Job in 1988 for his endorsement (which gave us Justice Souter- nice).
Now a days, candidate come to the state a pick a part the machine months ahead of the primary.
