A 25-year-old Jewish was stabbed Wednesday morning in crown heights in a possible hate crime, NYPD chief of detectives robert boyce said.
At around 11:40 a.m. in front of 644 Empire Boulevard, the victim identified by sources as Yehuda Leib Brikman, was stabbed by a man, who Yehuda believed to be the suspect, had just passed him. Yehuda walked into a nearby check cashing center where he was treated for a stab wound in his upper back, police said,

From his hospital bed Yehuda told investigators that he never saw the suspect before, as the suspect passed him and turned around just to stab him, sources said.
No words prior to the argument, He is dressed in hasidic garb. Right now we are looking at this as a possible hate crime because he is dressed in that fashion Boyce explained. a black male wearing a black jacket, blue green sweatshirt, fled southbound on albany toward lefferts boulevard.

My first thought as well. But at least in Israel, there are plenty of armed Jews nearby. That's not so true in Crown Heights.
