The Russian Ministry of Defense warned Turkey against launching a military incursion into Syria last week, announcing on Thursday that it had seen "growing signs" that Turkish forces were preparing to intervene to bolster rebel forces battling pro-regime troops in the north.
Some experts say, however, that Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be trying to bait Turkey into entering the Syrian battlefield in order to retaliate for Ankara's decision to down a Russian warplane in November.
"Russia is trying to draw Turkey into a fight to avenge the downing of its jet. Putin is confident he can win," retired Brig. Gen. Naim Baburoglu, an adviser to the Ankara-based National Security and Foreign Policy Research Center, told al-Monitor last week.

They already have plenty of those in Russia, eh comrade?
The warm-water port thing... well there are a lot of NATO countries Russian ships would pass by to get from the Baltic republics to the North Sea.

Not exactly a direct route to the Atlantic from Kalliningrad.
How about answering the question?
NATO, after Turkey shot down the Russian military plane, met and pretty much told Turkey they were on their own with Russia and they (NATO) were not going to get involved.
Kalliningrad is not as important as it used to be. I don’t know why your shocked by that. It is secure - NATO won’t dare take it away from Russia.
Just a yes or no will suffice.
Could you please provide a reference for that? And NATO doesn’t allow their members to defend their territory?
“Now they find that creating war can have terrible consequences.”
That qualifies as Breaking News!
Turkey's rising tension with Russia over Kurds puts Erdoßan in a corner Syrian Kurdish party opening a Moscow office marks new nadir in relations, and could lead to Turkish forces crossing border Escalating tension between Russia and Turkey will reach a new high when the Democratic Union party (PYD), the leading Kurdish political organisation in north-eastern Syria, which Ankara regards as a terrorist group, opens a representative office in Moscow on Wednesday at Vladimir Putinââ¬â¢s personal invitation. The development comes amid a dangerous tug-of-war between Russia and the US for power and influence in strategic areas along the Turkey-Syria border. Washington backs the Syrian Kurds in fighting Islamic State (Isis) jihadis. Moscowââ¬â¢s priority is to thwart western-backed efforts to topple Bashar al-Assadââ¬â¢s Syrian regime. Turkey is caught in the middle. Its biggest fear is that the PYD could establish autonomous control over large areas of northern Syria, linking up with independent Iraqi Kurdistan and encouraging Turkeyââ¬â¢s alienated ethnic Kurdish population to follow suit. Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees remain stranded at Turkish border Read more ââ¬ÅOur ambition is to rally support behind our Kurdish enclave in Syria through this office,ââ¬Â said Abdulsalam Ali, the Syrian Kurdish envoy to Moscow who is a member of the PYD. Wednesdayââ¬â¢s opening ceremony in Moscow, which is expected to be attended by Russian foreign ministry officials, is seen by Turkish politicians and analysts as a deliberate provocation and part of a wider bid to expand Russian regional influence.
It was in the news I believe the week after the shoot down. Turkey was playing tough with Russia expecting to be backed up by NATO. NATO saw straight thru their ruse and said forget it. I think NATO now regrets allowing Turkey into the club and have not figured out how to get rid of them.
The President that used to be the worst in history gave that away.......
I certainly hope so.
NATO should have kicked Turkey out during the Iraq war when Turkey refused to let us fly over.
They got to say no.
We should have said ‘OUT!’
