17­-year-­old raised thousands to build memorial for fallen law enforcement officers

SIERRA VISTA — When Zach Chrzanowski realized there was no memorial solely for officers killed while serving Cochise County, he took it upon himself to change that.

As a member of the Cochise District Boy Scouts Troop 445, Zach had to complete a service project in order to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. The 17-­year-­old junior from Buena High saw this as a chance to fulfill his commitment and give back to the law enforcement community as well.

About 10 months ago, Zach and his family began plans to honor the 27 law enforcement officers killed serving in Cochise County with a memorial, along with enshrining the names of two K9 officers that have died in the line of duty in the county as well.

Law enforcement memorial dedication ceremony set for Feb. 13

Sierra Vista, AZ. 02/05/16. Representatives from law enforcement agencies in Sierra Vista, Cochise County, and the State of Arizona will gather at a dedication ceremony for the Cochise County Law Enforcement Memorial in front of the Sierra Vista Police Department on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

For law enforcement officers, this memorial is a welcome honor to their peers who have fallen in the line of duty in Cochise County. For one Buena High School junior and soon-to-be Eagle Scout, the completed memorial marks the culmination of nearly 1,300 man hours of planning, organization, and execution.

“It has taught me to be a better leader and to delegate when I need to,” says Zachary Chrzanowski, a member of Cochise District Boy Scouts Troop 445 and Crew 445. Chrzanowski has been working on the memorial as his Eagle Scout project since April 23 of last year. His father and both of his grandfathers have served in law enforcement, which helped to inspire the project. More than 50 volunteers pitched in to get it done.

The memorial includes 27 names of law enforcement officers from various agencies who have died in the line of duty in Cochise County, dating back to 1880. It also honors the two K9s who died in the line of duty in Cochise County.

“We knew this would be a major project for Zach to take on. It’s inspiring to see him follow through and complete such a meaningful memorial,” Sierra Vista Police Chief Adam Thrasher says. “We’re proud to have it at our police department.”
