Sen. Rob Portman, a former U.S trade ambassador, announced Thursday that he opposes a sweeping 12-nation Pacific Rim trade agreement, dealing a setback to a deal that is seen as a key part of President Obamaâs economic legacy.
The Ohio Republican is facing a difficult re-election campaign against Ted Strickland, an anti-trade former Democratic governor, in a state that has seen a steep decline in manufacturing as a result of companies moving operations overseas. The announcement is a significant but not fatal blow to the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, which is protected by fast-track rules that ensure it cannot be filibustered in the Senate.
Portman’s lying. He loves these kinds of trade deals. He just doesn’t want to get booted out of office.
As soon as he is re-elected he will be backing this. Mark my words.
No question. But you know what? Portman actually listens to constituents and knows when there's something he can't get away with. He's smart and he's informed. That sellout on gay marriage came first thing when he got to the US Senate. I'm thinking that he calculated that would give him enough time for it not to cost his re-election.
In my mind, it's not enough for him to play the numbers game and vote against it because he's one who won't get re-elected if he supports it. It means NOTHING unless he brings about the bill's defeat.
The vote won’t take place until after the election, count on it.
Once they lie their way back into office, they’ll pass it.
Another Cruz miscalculation? He never considered that a lame duck session could be persuaded to pass it for some income security after they leave DC?
You're probably correct. All the more reason for President Trump to undo the damage!
And when Portman is defeated for re-election (or even if he isn’t), Mitch will talk him into voting AYE in a lame duck session.

There is no miscalculation by Cruz. K Street Republicans like Cruz want this done on the kenyan’s watch so they can “blame” him for it.
I am in Dayton, and I agree. He had all year to come out against this. Now he is trailing in the polls and has a change of heart? I don’t buy it. He is also supportive of open borders.
I lived in Dayton in the early 80’s. I found it to be an economically vibrant city at the time. I’m afraid to ask, how is it now?

Seems to contradict all the BS that Kasich has been spewing on the campaign trail and at debates about all the great things he has done for Ohio.
Well, you were mistaken. In the early 70s it was vibrant, but between 1970 and 1985 when I got here Dayton lost 1/3 of its population. It may have looked ok, but it’s collapse had started: McCalls, then soon after, Mead, NCR, Delphi, the giant GM truck factory, Delco, and one of the other “Registers” (Standard?) pulled out.
Moraine was nearly gone until some small businesses with tax breaks started to take over the GM plant. South of town was booming with tech (Teradata) but Dayton International Airport first lost the Piedmont hub in the merger, then UA Air removed Dayton as a hub, then Fed Ex pulled out. The airport was cut back by about 1/3 and only began to recover some when Delta’s withdrawal from Cincy caused Dayton’s prices to drop below Cincy’s. It didn’t help that Wilmington lost the DHL hub, either. Downtown got 5/3 Field (and the Dragons set records with longest-running sell outs), but the Arcade NEVER made it despit millions of dollars poured into it.
Instead, the U iof Dayton began gobbling up NCR property and the failed businesses on Brown street moving north. I am extremely skeptical of the “eds, meds, and Feds” approach to growth. I still think you need real businesses. I would say now Dayton has stabilized at a fraction of its forger size.
Sending 100 grand to Cochran in Mississippi to fund the race baiting tactics in the run off election turned me forever against Portman. I won’t vote for Strickland but I draw the line at Portman.
