Clinton, Sanders and why this is a dangerous moment for Democrats (Washington Post)
The Washington Post ^ | 2/7/16 | Ruth Marcus

(snip)

This is a tempting and dangerous moment for Democrats. The party has clearly become more liberal, reflecting the increasing polarization of both sides. According to the Pew Research Center, 41 percent of Democrats described themselves as liberal in 2015, compared with 27 percent in 2000. The share of Democrats identifying themselves as moderate fell from 43 percent in 2000 to 35 percent in 2015.

The success of Sanders's full-throated progressivism among the party faithful is no surprise, especially in liberal-leaning Iowa and New Hampshire. But, notwithstanding the current head-to-head polls that he likes to cite, Sanders at the top of the Democratic ticket threatens a general-election disaster, and not just for the top spot.

True, more Americans overall identify themselves as liberal -- up from 17 percent in 1992 to 24 percent in 2014, according to Gallup. But that leaves the vast majority with a different outlook, 34 percent who describe themselves as moderate, 38 percent conservative. How, exactly, are they going to respond to a democratic socialist's call for a political revolution?

Sanders's answer is that he could inspire a grass-roots revolution, producing a flood of new voters, as he said in Thursday's MSNBC debate...

Both Hillary and Sanders are running against the crummy Onama economy. Clinton is running against the NAFTA legacy of job exporting when her husband signed it into law.

There’s no vetting of either. Nobody has asked Sanders about his USSR trip or even his atheism and Marxism. All legitimate questions.

Nobody has asked Hillary how she could take money from Russia and other countries when she was SoS and directly responsible for policy decisions.

I'm a Democrat running for Congress. Do I want to campaign in Nov with Burney or Hildabeast? Tough question...

The democrat party has moved way left of what the Clintons were if you think it could be possible. Bernie’s politics is where the real heart and soul of the democrat communist party is. Hiliary is old stuff.

A lot of Freepers were able to hold their noses and vote for McLame just because he was running with Palin.

If the Hildebeest or Sanders get a prominent hispanic or black to run along side them then that might allow otherwise disinterested Democrats to convince themselves to put down the weed and stumble over to the polls.

Good point. Especially with the POTUS candidate being old and unhealthy to begin with.

The danger to the Democrat party is an amazing swing to the radical Left that has masked the reality that their choices consist of a communist and a crook; and a self-righteous, gullible, entitled class of new voters who weren’t even alive when Communism fell and so are new fish for old lures. I truly wish they’d be able to sample the consequences of their folly if only the rest of us didn’t have to suffer them too.

Those “new fish for old lures” as you fittingly called them certainly don’t learn about the grave consequences of collectivism in their schooling, thanks to the old stinky fish who never learned the old lessons running the teachers unions. ...and the country at large.

Democratic socialism is like democratic alcoholism, a bad thing with a nice word in front of it.

They’re not LIBERALS, they’re LEFTISTS.

They only use the facade of “liberal” (a la “let people do what they want”) to guilt others into tolerating their intolerable views, until they can persuade enough people to support “democratic centrism”, to wit: tyranny of the majority, aka Bolshevism - the origin of Soviet Communism.

There’s nothing “liberal” about the current Democratic party. Notice that “celebrate diversity” has mutated into “celebrate OUR values, and ONLY our values, else you’re evil and must be destroyed”.
