Actually, much of the very real technology you use on a daily basis today was inspired by Star Trek. (The History Channel did a wonderful special about it last year.)

I thought it was about preserving and taking care of things it is responsible for, not throwing things in a closet to rot. If they don't want to take care of it, give it to someone who does.
