"Who you vote for is your secret," the letter, posted by some recipients on Twitter, says. "But whether or not you vote is public record. Many organizations monitor turnout in your neighborhood and are disappointed by the inconsistent voting of many of your neighbors."
"We will be reviewing ... official voting records after the upcoming election to determine whether you joined your neighbors who voted in 2014," the mailer concludes. "If you do not vote this year, we will be interested to hear why not."
So they aren't the only ones and this isn't new. In Alaska, voters have complained about receiving a similar kind of letter...
In Florida, a St. Petersburg blog reported earlier this week on a letter sent by a group funded by the state and national realtors association. "Your neighbors will know," the letter warns. "It's public record."
Yet another reported vote-shaming letter in North Carolina, sent by the state Democratic Party...
But this isn't just a scare tactic thought up by desperate political operatives.
In a paper published in 2008, researchers from Yale University...found is that among people who received the mailers "substantially higher turnout was observed."
"These findings demonstrate the profound importance of social pressure as an inducement to political participation," the researchers wrote.
It dates back multiple cycles -- one could argue at least as far back as the 2004 presidential election's "Vote or Die" campaign by hip hop mogul Sean Combs and others. In 2012, the influential liberal group MoveOn.org sent voters report cards...
During the same cycle, the Toledo Blade reported on letters received by Ohio voters from a group called Americans for Limited Government. It presented itself as a "voter audit"...
Reports of similar letters popped up in North Carolina and Virginia that year.

But Cruz is supposed to be a different kind of candidate.
It turns out, he is just another typical politician.
Jedi,
Don’t be going AWOL on us Monday night and Tuesday.
If you have to be shamed into voting you probably shouldn’t be voting in the first place.
Very....Soviet
Mao would be so proud.
Get out the vote efforts are what they are. There isn’t exactly a non-typical way to do it. Everything and the kitchen sink is thrown into those efforts. Cruz’ record as a non-typical politician who stands up to the establishment for conservatives is clear.
Because the establishment is running scared. They cannot allow The People to pick their government.
Just curious.
Since the party, not a candidate, sent out those letters,
how did Democrats actually do overall in NC in 2014?
IIRC, the (D) incumbent US Senator lost to Tillis
I guess its Okey Dokey if you do it for Jesus.
Oh, in case you didn’t hear and I know you were concerned so I wanted to let you know that Drudge does now have the story about Ted and his shaming mailings up on his site. Prime position, top left corner.
It thought the story last night was that Trump made him do it.
She would have lost no matter what. That was a record breaking election for NC repubs.
This has always been around. Does anyone think it is new? Is it more now? Or just more publicized with fake outrage?
“Very Soviet”
Very Cuban.
Did Cruz ever give up his Cuban citizenship?
