RedState managing editor Leon H. Wolf blasted stalwart conservative senator Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)80% today, writing that Sessions "has never really been accused of being the brightest person in the Senate."
Sessions, who is widely esteemed as the Senate's populist elder statesman and champion of working class Americans, came under Wolf's attack because of reports that the Alabama senator "appears set to endorse Donald Trump."
In the post, derisively titled "Don't Worry, Jeff Sessions, Trump Will Still Respect You in the Morning," Wolf acknowledges that Sessions is the country's definitive principled leader on the issue of illegal immigration, but he uses reports of the Trump endorsement to attack the Senator's intelligence.
The crux of Wolf's argument is his belief that the GOP front-runner isn't legitimately tough on illegal immigration, despite the fact that Trump launched his presidential campaign by highlighting the problem, made it the basis for his first policy position paper (crafted under the consultation of Sessions), and rocketed to the top of the polls due in large part to his unflinching stance on this issue despite intense media criticism.
Wolf writes (emphasis in original):
"A lot of Trump's hardcore supporters can be expected to stick with Trump regardless of how many times he betrays them. Let's be honest, they aren't in it for any policy in particular, they are just attracted to the Trump cult of personality. Sessions, however, allegedly does believe in some issues, and should be expected to have at least noticed that Trump has pulled a complete 180 in the last two weeks."
"But not to worry, Jeff," Wolf dismissively closes his article. "I'm sure Trump will still respect you in the morning, and will not at all turn his back on your issue once he gets elected."

I hope this rumor isn’t true. Frankly, I don’t understand the Trump allure, as much as I like his brash manner and his willingness to take on the PC Police.
On policy, he’s not where I think our country needs to be heading.
Sen. Sessions is widely respected, one of the few Senators that actually does what he promises during elections when he votes in DC.
Everyone says Session’s name when they say they are as conservative as Sessions. He is to DC as Sheriff Joe is to the border of Arizona, meaning zero BS.

This article makes me wonder WHO according to Leon Wolf is the brightest person in the senate....
We should leave our borders wide open and not cut taxes, not defend guns, life, religious freedom and not rebuild our military?

I realize that Jeff Sessions, with his slow, southern delivery and Alabama drawl may come across as a redneck hick, but he’s a man of unwavering principle and no idiot. I know he has a relationship with both Trump and Cruz (he’s one of Cruz’s few allies in the Senate) and that says a lot to me about both of them.

I would say that Leon H. Wolf, RedState’s extremely biased and nasty managing editor, reminds me of a selected few posters here, but that wouldn’t be nice.
You see, Leon is not content to limit his vicious attacks onto Mr. Trump, Leon must also attack Trump supporters and even “imagined” or “possible” supporters, including Senator Jeff Sessions!
If the endorsement rumor is true, I anticipate Sessions being another apostate casualty sacrificed at the altar of Ted “Anointed One” Cruz by his most zealous supporters. The wailing and gnashing of teeth will be epic. The FR frontpage will be a sea of RedState tears.
I’ll still gladly vote for Ted if he pulls it off, despite how off-putting some of the Cruzaders can be when they get all holier-than-thou.
Leon Wolf is an idiot at large as are most of the RedRINOstate writers. :-)

Erick Erickson needs to say away from the donuts. All that fat is turning his brain, what little brain he had, to mush. Sessions is the most conservative senator we have. RedRINO slams him because he might endorse Trump. If he were endorsing anyone else he would be the greatest conservative since Barry Goldwater.
