At start of campaign, the last gasp of political parties?

As the nation begins the process of electing a new president, the roles of the Republican and Democratic parties are undergoing fundamental shifts that are threatening their impact on both elections and policy.

Built in the 19th century, grown dominant in the 20th, they are largely out of date in this new age.

What gets to me is that as more and more formerly republican voters are looking for a new home, liberals seem to be growing more loyal and subservient to the democrat party. (JMHO)

IMHO there is one thing missing about discussions dealing with political parties.

Like it or not they have lead, directly, to the growth of government. The divisiveness we are seeing today is the logical outgrowth of political parties. Without political parties providing a continuity of thought after a person has left office you would see some level of change every election cycle because the spokesperson for that political view would be out of office.

As the expansion of political continuity between election cycles grew so did the size of government. Primarily because the political parties spent more time ensuring their political continuity than anything else. This has gotten so bad that the current Attorney General has openly stated that the Democrats are, through their appointment and hiring practices, ensuring that Obama’s policies will be continued long after he has left office regardless of which party wins the 2016 national elections.

We have become a nation that places political loyalty above service to the Republic; one of our founding fathers’ biggest fears.

Only Cruz can save the GOP. Trump gives the same old oligarch vibes. Dump Trump!

No, but a new conservative party may rise up if the Republicans don’t return to their status as an opposition party to the Democrats instead of “liberal-lite”.

Exactly. Party systems die once the Anti-Democrat party collapses, and a new party emerges that actually represents the people it needs votes from.

Happened to the Federalists, and Whigs and the GOP isn’t immune either.

Today’s political parties have become nothing more than money laundering operations for lobbyist/donor money.

They have enabled the wholesale purchase of government.

They no longer serve the individual constituent taxpaying voter.

I hold the view that people with certain personalities and traits are drawn to gov’t service. And, the bulk of these folks drink the far left Kool-Aid. These folks are not voted in or appointed. Trust me, the EPA employees will will carry the far left no matter who is in office.

Good point, Conservatives tend to see Government as nothing more than a “necessary evil”, and tend to stand clear of anything to do with government and just go and live their own lives.

Well said. You boiled several chapters of what’s gone wrong in America down to a couple of paragraphs that you can now consider legally stolen and likely to be reused more than once.
