I was in Japan during that time. It was especially bad around and even right in Ueno Station. One day, I had enough and yelled out HENZO TELEKADO loud enough to attract the police. Of course, the peeps scattered, but I gave the police enough of a description that their selling days inside Ueno Station probably ended shortly thereafter. It wasn’t long after that when the visa free program, a relic from the days of the Shah, ended.
By the time that the big round-up which you describe took place, I had moved to Kobe and missed the fun.
