I donated because I believe that Trump has the resources to find the best organizations who will use the money to help vets, not high paid administrators.

Trump initially announced the funds were for Wounded Warrior and other Veterans groups. But there were a flurry of articles criticizing the Wounded Warrior organization for spending too much on themselves and only 60% on veterans.
So Trump is smart to distance himself and give him some time to vet the organizations before distributing the money.

Setting up a new nonprofit takes time and up to a year to get 501c3 status. Using an existing organization makes sense and is practical.

Structuring it this way likely means that Trump has no legal obligation to distribute the money to veterans groups. It could go to any charitable purpose.
