All adults, including pregnant women and new mothers, should be screened for depression as a routine part of health care, a government advisory group recommended Tuesday.
Depression is a common public health problem, and screening simply involves health workers asking about certain symptoms even if patients don't mention them.
The second part of the recommendation from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is more difficult â ensuring systems are in place to properly diagnose and treat people identified through screening.
And the guideline, published by the Journal for the American Medical Association, couldn't determine how often adults should be screened.
Some things to know about depression:
DEPRESSION IS MORE THAN NORMAL SADNESS
Officially called major depressive disorder, depression interferes with people's ability to function in their daily lives and can even lead to suicide. Nearly 7 percent of U.S. adults experience a depressive episode each year, the National Institute of Mental Health estimates. Symptoms can include persistent sadness, feeling hopeless, difficulty concentrating, problems sleeping and loss of interest in once-pleasurable activities. People sometimes also experience physical symptoms, such as headaches or back pain, which can confuse diagnosis.
NO SINGLE CAUSE
Depression can affect anyone, and there are multiple risk factors. A personal crisis, such as loss of a loved one, sometimes precedes depression, but it also can occur without any obvious trigger. Depression and other mood disorders tend to run in families, and depression frequently accompanies serious physical disorders...
WHY SCREEN?
Depression can go unrecognized, especially if patients don't seek a diagnosis... ..A variety of screening questionnaires are available, such as one that asks how often, over the last two weeks, patients have felt bad about themselves or felt like they're a failure, had little interest in doing things or experienced problems sleeping, sleeping or concentrating.

So when I heard this last night on the radio, my first thought was about Obama's agenda to enact gun control or even confiscation. How incredibly convenient to get a task force together to 'recommend' mental health screenings as ...gee...we all agree that the mass shooting incidents are often mental health related.
Even this article doesn't discern between true mental illness and daily life stressors that can cause deep sadness, like grief.
This if the first step in the government being able to classify you as mentally unstable and keep you from owning your guns.
WOW...this administration is certainly up for using every crisis to their best advantage. Now they are going to screen you for mental illness, whether you are seeking treatment or not. Brilliant!
Why should people be depressed under Obamunism?
Yep! Back door gun grab!
This is so they can decide you either are 'depressed' or have 'tendencies' so they can take your guns away.
Don't play, people.
I figure that they would do a booming business for something like this at a DNC convention.

Tell me how a doctor can screen for depression when they can’t tell Frustration from Depression? Just another reason to grab our guns. Like a Military person reporting PSTD.
Grief gives you depression, chronic pain, violent loss of a Loved One also gives you PSTD to add to the depression which is temporary and does not need medication to fix it. Most sane people learn to deal or cope with it. It is the over emotional immature people who never learn to deal with it or life’s hard knoxs. BEEN there, live it and I don’t need their stinking pills. I have GOD.
Step 2: Get ‘em on prescription meds.
Step 3: Confiscate their guns.
I bet they include a provision that refusing to take a test for depression is a sign of depression.
“This if the first step in the government being able to classify you as mentally unstable and keep you from owning your guns. “
Totally agree. I said this weeks ago when they wanted every new mother screened for post partum depression.
Obama has clearly been studying the Soviet handbook on how to abuse the mental health professions for political purposes.
...and those who are depressed, have their ‘privilege’ to own guns taken away forever.
Preparatory to gun confiscation.
Yup.
If you don’t like the government control, you’re clinically depressed and need to have your guns taken away.
The pharmaceutical companies will love this, too. Heck, they’re probably sponsoring it. Another way to get more people taking their pills and potions.
This means don’t go to the doctor for anything, thereby reducing costs.
If you do go, say as little as possible.
“This if the first step in the government being able to classify you as mentally unstable and keep you from owning your guns.”
True dat. No fly no buy no due process list.
To keep people from getting guns. Only reason.
If you’ve been “screened”, you can’t own a gun, no matter the results of the screening.
THAT is the purpose!
Oppression, on the other hand, seems to be going around a lot now days.!!
