President Barack Obama said Monday he will ban the use of solitary confinement for juvenile and low-level offenders in federal prisons, citing the potential for "devastating, lasting psychological consequences" from the use of the isolation as punishment.

"It has been linked to depression, alienation, withdrawal, a reduced ability to interact with others and the potential for violent behavior," Obama wrote in an op-ed posted Monday evening on The Washington Post's website. "Some studies indicate that it can worsen existing mental illnesses and even trigger new ones. Prisoners in solitary are more likely to commit suicide, especially juveniles and people with mental illnesses." ...

Roughly 100,000 people are in solitary confinement in the U.S.

That’s astonishing and very expensive for the taxpayer.

That said, I don’t think juveniles should be subjected to solitary confinement.

Making life better for criminals, terrorists, politicians and cronies, but worse for everybody else.

What about the “devastating, lasting, psychological consequences” that you, BHO, have foisted upon the entire nation?

“low-level offenders” -— If they are “low-level” offenses, why are they federal crimes?

Because Obama doesn’t recognize state governments, most likely. And thus he decides what is “low-level” and what is not, arbitrarily.

If I were to go to prison, solitary is exactly what I would want.

The general population with gangs and all manner of sordid problems, no thanks.

Very broad brush action by Obama.

I’m sure some of those 16-17 year old prisoners are socio/psychopaths. Saying we won’t keep any of them in solitary will surely raise the prison murder rate.

"It has been linked to depression, alienation, withdrawal, a reduced ability to interact with others and the potential for violent behavior,"

A: Probably why they are in prison in the first place.

B: Passed around as sex toys by bigger, older depressed, alienated, withdrawn, violent people is going to fix that?

Worked in the PA Dept. of Corrections. There are reasons for solitary confinement. Most of it is for those crooks that take self lock up. They are scared or are on the verge of being assaulted by other crooks. Like being raped or extorted. Some for fighting and others because they are assaultive towards all staff and the crooks. This crap that this clown is doing to the justice system and to Corrections is all by design!!

Your absolutely right a good portion of the guys put themselves in protective custody.
Some even assault staff knowing full well they’ll be put in protective custody (PC).
Its self preservation for a lot of these young punks.

Solitary confinement is protective in nature most often.

I know there are lots of people who 5 ink prison rape and murders are a good thing, but they are not.

The Chicago bathhouse president is providing young prison bitches for his homies.

One hundred percent of the people who agree with this policy are openly okay with that.
