ANCHORAGE, Alaska â A magnitude-7.1 earthquake knocked items off shelves and walls in Alaska early Sunday morning, jolting the nerves of residents in this earthquake-prone region. But there were no reports of injuries.
Alaska's state seismologist, Michael West, called it the strongest earthquake in the state's south-central region in decades. Alaska often has larger or more powerful earthquakes, such as a 7.9 last year in the remote Aleutian Islands.

isn’t 7.1 kind of huge?
just some shaking of shelves? hmm.
omg Hope Palin does not think God is addressing her. Though he should.
You’re a day late here Bub, this is Monday morning. Old news.....
Big? Yes! But, it was 160 miles away from Anchorage. Size and distance both matter.
Kobe....6.9.....12 miles from Kobe....4,600 dead
Loma Prieta....6.9....60 miles from Oakland....63 dead
Los Angeles....6.7....20 miles from Los Angeles....57 dead
wow.
what dose the distance away mean?
is that where it started and then it loses energy as it travels? i dont know
Yes. In general, the farther away you are from the center of the earthquake, the less intense it will be. Because the energy is spread out over more territory.
But, there are some complicating factors. If you live right on the fault line it may be more intense. And if your building is built on sand or soil rather than rock, that can increase the intensity.
gotcha.
and i guess the construct of the home or business would matter also.
It was 75 miles deep, and yes soil makes the difference, and home are much thicker mostly due to being much more insulated.
so the closer to the surface, the worse it is?
is 75 miles considered deep for an earthquake?
75 miles deep is moderate deep, 1964 quake was 64 miles deep. But was 200 times stronger and lasted for 5 minutes.
We had a 7 downgraded to a 6.9 in Olympia, Was and no one died.
Somewhere around 2001 I think.
7.1 is big, but big quakes are pretty common in Alaska.
I guess there was no sunami warning?
200 times? then the ratings scale must be exponential or that would be like a 150.5 earthquake!!
