So, why didn’t this newspaper quote the 1790 law that made things so crystal clear?

They were hoping you wouldn’t notice.

Seriously, I have forgotten what Cruz claims to be. Is it “natural born”, or “naturalized”?

I just looked all that up but was too tired to digest it.
I presume the naturalized may not serve as president.

Because they were lazy?

Because they assumed, that because it is 2016, Google exists (relieving Will88 and who knows who else of a trip to the Public Library)?

From the Act:

And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens

An interesting fact is that the 1790 Naturalization Act is the only piece of US legislation (other than the Constitution) to use the term "natural born citizen".

-- So, why didn't this newspaper quote the 1790 law that made things so crystal clear? --

The crystal clarity of the 1790 Act is opposite the clarity that most people assign. The Act says a child born abroad to a citizen parent is not an NBC, but we'll pretend he or she is. This is a legal fiction. Legal fictions are so common in the law, as to be totally unremarkable.
