A 60-year-old illegal immigrant wanted for killing a police officer in the Dominican Republic is behind bars after Lowell cops took him in at gunpoint, police said.
Ramon Aguasviva-Mejia, who had recently lived in Lawrence, also has warrants out of Suffolk Superior Court for drug distribution. He is also wanted by Quincy District Court for felony assault, police said.
Detectives from the Lowell Police Department’s Special Investigations Section had Aguasviva-Mejia under surveillance Sunday afternoon in Central Plaza on Church Street, but he spotted the tail and bolted, narrowly avoiding hitting the cops as he fled, police said.

The cockroach?
It’s kind of an inside joke on the Howie Carr show. He has a bee in his bonnet (rightfully) about how crimes committed by illegals are usually reported in the Boston area press. In almost all cases the perp will be referenced by the town in which he resides, with no mention of status or nationality. So a guy on the lam from Nicaragua who gets nabbed for major drug trafficking in Lawrence becomes “a Lawrence man” for the sake of the story.
Yesterday Howie spent a good 20 minutes reading headlines of random crimes committed by “a xxxx man,” followed by the actual nationality/name and, of course, the cucaracha horn sound. It was hilariously exasperating.
You need to be a local to understand. La Cucaracha is played on trumpet on the Howie Carr Show just before he reads off the daily list of illegal immigrant arrests.
