In the ‘80s when the holiday was being considered, there was quite a debate over combining Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays to make room on the federal holiday calendar for King.
We had a local DJ, The Greaseman, a shock jock ‘way more clever than Howard Stern ever though of being. His schtick was to play a character filled with false bravado.
At the height of the debate, he came on the air one morning in a quiet, reflective mood; very much out of character for him. He said he regretted the controversy and offered his solution:
Shoot four more and take the whole damn week off.
