A lot of them are at those 7-11 Mini Marts where the manager is in cahoots with the scammers. (did I write cahoots? watching too many retro westerns)

This happened to me twice last year in the Wiltshire/Beverly area of Los Angeles. I now use only cash at gas stations. All gas stations, always.

Nothing wrong with “cahoots” or the way you used it. There’s a lot of sidewinders out there.

This is why I use a credit card... cash back, and they are on the hook for fraud, not me.

“Time to go back to cash.”
I did that a long time ago, and I’m so glad that I did.

Agreed. The problem is I don't think retailers have been hit hard enough yet.
The deadline for liability shift was October, 2015. So now, if a store sells 1,000.00 worth of clothing to someone who uses a cloned card and you didn't have a chip reading terminal, the RETAILER now loses the grand, not the card processor. I'm hoping that by mid-2016, retailers (especially pay at the pump terminals) will realize the exposure is just too high and get the stuff swapped out. Hell, I'd even pay for a USB chip reader for my PC to cover online purchases were it possible.

I remember reading something not long ago where something similar was done on an ATM. I think it was there was a camera hidden to catch not only the card number but the PIN too.

Public executions on youtube.
The system is too soft on thieves assuming they get caught at all.

A picture of one of these things would sure help us ignorant hicks to recognise them.

its pretty easy to check for the scanners. They fit over the top of the original one. Every time I use one at the gas station or bank atm I grab it and pull on it. The scams will pull off. I’ve never found one but a policeman friend told me how to check.
