South Carolina: Trump Booed at Tea Party Convention for Attack on Cruz Goldman Sachs Loan

Alex Jaffe reports at NBC:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Among conservatives, Donald Trump can typically do no wrong — until he attacks Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

On Saturday, Trump drew boos from a grassroots conservative crowd during remarks at the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition Convention for his attack on Cruz’s previously undisclosed loans.

“You give a campaign contribution to Ted Cruz, you get whatever the hell you want,” he said, before boos erupted from the crowd.

Trump went on as the boos grew louder: “Say whatever you want, it’s okay, he didn’t report his bank loans. He’s got bank loans from Goldman Sachs, he’s got bank loans from Citibank, folks, and then he acts like Robin Hood?”

One man in the crowd, 71-year-old Air Force veteran Joe Bates, stood up and shouted angrily, wagging his finger at the candidate.

Trump continued: “You know, say whatever you want, but it doesn’t work that way.”

It was a stark illustration of the political perils the two candidates face in attacking each other as they sprint toward the early primary contests. Each risks losing ground among conservatives that haven’t yet made up their minds between the two candidates, or inflaming their opponent’s base against them.

With that in mind, Cruz had, up until last week, carefully avoided taking on Trump directly.

But with two weeks till the high-profile Iowa caucuses, and the two candidates just points apart in most polls of Republicans there, this week the gloves came off — culminating in a number of explosive exchanges between the two at Thursday’s debate over Cruz’s claim to U.S. citizenship and Trump’s “New York values.”

I’ve been supporting Trump since Walker crashed and burned on immigration, but he’s losing it here. This may be the peak many have been expecting in his poll numbers?

Trump’s a fine guy, I like him. Maybe they’ll let him have his television show back.

I just really hate all the fighting between Trump and Cruz..this is all about making sure Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders do NOT become President. Hearing Ted Cruz during the debate, talking about how if a Dem wins, they can get a few new Justices to the Supreme Court to overturn the 2nd Amendment, that absolutely TERRIFIES ME I haven’t stopped thinking about that ever since I heard him say it

Yep, this was a disaster for Trump. Five people out of 400 made some noise. Thirty seconds later and he got a resounding applause from the group.

Folks can easily check it out for themselves.

They don’t need an asshat clown who misrepresents it to them.

Agree. These two need to call a truce and unite forces.

Agreed. I’ve written Trump twice about pulling punches on Ted. I truly believe a Trump/Cruz ticket is a sure winner and this recent spat does nothing to further that.

I like them both, they both have my vote. Always loved Ted Cruz and I like Donald Trump too they could both be a great team together, instead they are fighting, we have to keep the eye on the prize or else it might be too late to save this country. Just the thought of our 2nd Amendment rights being taken away from us makes me physically sick

I have fun with the trumpies, but I’ll vote for the Donald if he wins the nomination. I’ll vote for a raw potato if it’s running against Hillary.

This is only going to help one of them. I think Cruz because Trump can only attack from the left or with lies. Let them fight it out. Trump is proving what New York values are.

I just really hate all the fighting between Trump and Cruz.

I do too. And i hate the infighting here at FR between the Trump and Cruz camps. We have a chance to put someone other than an outright socialist or a uniparty NWO corporatist into the White House. I pray we don't blow it.

FWIW, I lived in SC when I was a teenager and my sister still lives there. If they're booing in SC, nine times out of ten it's organized by the Lindsey Graham "Republicans".

How SC ended up with so many Rockefeller Republicans is beyond me but it's neck deep in then in the lower part of the state. Around Camden and Hilton Head I guess you could expect it, but why so many average folks are that way has always puzzled me.

Generally speaking, in SC if people would be inclined to boo and hiss at a speaker, they don't bother to go hear them. That's probably true everywhere, in fact. Booing is an act for the media, not representative of anything other than the organizational efforts someone put into getting their people into the audience.
