Some of the most ardent Americans I’ve ever met are in the far exurbs of very liberal cities, they’re hardened to the excess because they see it so frequently.
Entire states are tough to categorize, especially in the southeast and southwest, due to so much in-migration from other areas. You have pockets that are not much different from the cities that they left, and you have the surrounding countryside beyond the suburbs remaining largely as it’s been.
It’s an urban/rural divide, and more urban states are less conservative.
And the offical name of East Germany was "German Democratic Republic"
