The Obama administration decision Friday to halt new coal leases on federal lands amid a program overhaul only "attacks middle-class jobs and punishes the poor," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

"At a time when Americans are calling on the Obama administration to protect our nation and strengthen the middle class, the administration is again making clear that its priorities are elsewhere," McConnell said.

The six-term Kentucky Republican was among many GOP legislators who attacked the administration's decision Nearly 40 percent of the coal produced in the United States comes from federal lands — primarily Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico.

"Today's announcement to halt federal coal leasing represents just the latest front in an ideological 'war on coal' that has contributed to devastation in communities in Eastern Kentucky and to the loss of thousands of jobs across the commonwealth," McConnell said. "No wonder more than 70 percent of Americans want to see the next president take a different approach from the current one."

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said Friday the administration is seeking to determine whether fees charged to mining companies provide a fair return to American taxpayers and reflect coal's impact on the environment.

Seems someone needs to ask where in the law of this country a President can unilaterally do this.

And since when is the administration concerned about a 'fair return' for the taxpayer.

Was Solyndra a fair return?

Now that the budget is out of the way, and we have an election coming up, do the GOP dare to even voice their opposition.

Fail to see where ‘fair return’ exists in the Constitution. I do see A1S8, 5th, 9/10th, 13th...

Was the exec amnesty legal? Actually, it was ruled not. GOP funded it still.
PP?
O’Care?
GM?

Haven’t heard a lot of the typical election-year bogeyman talk from the GOP. Even less of the ‘town hall’ meetings.

Wonder why that is? /s

Mizz Jewell should have her pompous azz hauled in front of Congress and some pointed questions should be asked.

Then the Interior Dept should be reorganized.

Obama said way back when he was running for the DNC nomination that he intended to destroy the coal industry. I remember seeing clips of the interview.

Republicans have done nothing from Clinton to now about coal mine closures or anything else.
