The punishment in the USA for desertion during a declared war is also death.After a trial and conviction. The Russians shot deserters upon capture. You fight, you maybe die. You run, you certainly die.

Officially. But sh** is different in a war zone.
Before everyone had cameras, I’m sure the protocol in the field for any true deserters who put men at risk was SSS (shoot, shovel, shutup)
Someone like Bergdahl would have been dead meat back in the day. Nobody would risk their life in the bush to bring him to the brass for some clown trial. The only thing we’d hear is his name on the MIA list...
