Donald Trump faces accusations that he's a Nickelback fan
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | January 11 2016 | Adam Boult

Donald Trump has been called a lot of things in his time, but rarely have his critics stooped quite as low as this. At a rally in South Carolina last week, a Trump aide removed a handwritten sign from a man in the crowd after it was noticed it bore an egregious claim: Trump likes Nickelback.

This is the end of the Trump campaign. Not sure he can recover from this.

Haha.. funny stuff.

A serious question for someone who was young when Reagan was elected:

Is there any comparison between Reagan’s conversion from democrat to republican, and Trump’s conversion?

Many cruzers claim that Trump is merely an opportunist, and can’t be trusted. Was that also said of Reagan during his election bid?

Curious how these two compare, if at all.

Reagan was treated like dog dung by the establishment and even many of the California so called establishment republicans.

Reagan had been a liberal democrat in his earlier years and voted for FDR four times and admired FDR.

books.google.com/books?id=U2cs7IHERBwC&pg=PA12&lpg=PA12&dq=Ron+Reagan+voted+for+FDR+four+times&source=bl&ots=iYmMp0EL0c&sig=YJl3eWma9XLzKjJPCMd9nXhUunw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiF4YDJmvfJAhUU3mMKHaptA0UQ6AEIIzAB#v=onepage&q=Ron%20Reagan%20voted%20for%20FDR%20four%20times&f=false

Their logic was to throw Reagan out and to the dogs.

Fortunately, people like nopardons and I refused to stab Reagan in the back. He won the nomination and became a great president in spite of being a democrat and really liking and voting for FDR 4 times.

Not a way to compare. Reagan’s conversion came a long time before he was elected president. By 1980 his conservative credentials were beyond reproach.

Reagan is / was the gold standard. I don’t see another that measures up to him in that sense. Now or in the future.

“a Trump aide removed a handwritten sign from a man in the crowd”

Obviously a different definition of “handwritten” I’m unaware of.

There is really no comparison. Trump is a lifelong liberal that magically became a conservative, not surprisingly, when he decided to run for president.

Compare with Reagan:

Reagan, a registered Democrat, became acquainted with communism while serving on the board of the Screen Actors Guild in the 1940’s. He became rabidly anti-communist. He remained so during his term as president of SAG. He began voting Republican and supporting Republican candidates and policies with Eisenhower’s first run for office. He never voted Democrat again.

He vocally supported Nixon and campaigned on his behalf against JFK saying that in JFK he could see “old Karl Marx.” Reagan changed party affiliations and fully supported Republican candidates and platforms through the early 1960’s. He was so well known as a vocal conservative that by 1964 he was asked to give a speech supporting Barry Goldwater. The speech, “A Time for Choosing,” stands as the single greatest speech and outline of conservative principles ever given, IMO.

Afterwards, Reagan ran for governor of California as a conservative and largely, though imperfectly, governed as a conservative. After his time in office as a conservative governor, Reagan became an early prototype of Rush Limbaugh, giving a conservative radio broadcast every week. He also penned conservative columns in newspapers and magazines, working tirelessly for conservatism. Then he ran for the presidency as a conservative candidate in the Republican Party.

Reagan lived and worked for decades pushing the conservative agenda and became the established voice of conservatism long before he ran for the presidency.

I appreciate the thoughtful responses. Thanks.

Has Trump provided any explanation for his changing of stripes? Given so much as a “When I was young and stupid, I was, well, young and stupid.”?

There are great differences. Maybe the best way to describe them would be to imagine Reagan's record if it had been parallel to Trump's.

Instead of becoming a Conservative Republican in the early 1950's and refining his conversion as national spokesperson for GE, Reagan would have remained a Liberal Democrat through the 1950's, the 1960's (no "A Time for Choosing" speech in support of Goldwater), and only begun questioning Democrat Party orthodoxy during the disastrous Carter years. He would have been a close associate and supporter of JFK and LBJ. He never would have run for and become governor of California, preferring instead to remain in the private sector as a highly successful and wealthy game show host.

Finally, around mid 1978, with the shambles of the Carter administration becoming obvious, Reagan would have changed his party registration to Republican and in mid-1979 announced his candidacy for president on that ticket. He would have used his incomparable communication skills to lay out a vivid image of America reborn but with almost no real details. And with no first hand experience in government (remember, no Sacramento years) Reagan would need to offer himself as the classic outsider and lone man on a white horse coming to save the townsfolk. But detailed proposals based on Conservative principles? That was for egg head losers like his main opponent in the primaries, William Renquist.

Excellent question that I, too, am curious about. I was alive back then but at age 2, I have zero memory. My first and earliest memory of him was when my mom dropped me off at my babysitter’s house and we watched his inauguration. I had just turned 3.
