If you’ve ever dealt with someone who is delusional you know they will say the most amazing, flies-in-the-face-of-reality things to protect their version of the world. So, another possibility is that he believes what he’s saying. To believe otherwise would cause his carefully constructed fictional world to blow away like tissue paper in a tornado. Not only must he believe the lie but he must convince you to believe it also.
I had a delusional boss who was so convincing he manuvered the company to adopt a course that destroyed it and took 80% of the jobs with it. Even when I confronted him with hard facts, he brushed them off, acting as though I was a naïve, unsophisticated child. Until the company imploded he had me doubting my own sanity. (In true big corporation form, they allowed him to serve until retirement and he left with a huge bonus and a pension. The rest of us got fired.)
