Mexico Seeks to Extradite ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán to U.S.

Mexico Seeks to Extradite ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán to U.S. José de Córdoba and Dudley Althaus Updated Jan. 9, 2016 5:24 p.m. ET

MEXICO CITY—Mexico will act on U.S. requests to extradite captured drug lord Joaquín Guzmán, the government said Saturday.

Mr. Guzmán, known as “El Chapo” or “Shorty,” was recaptured Friday after escaping from a maximum-security prison in Mexico in July. Mr. Guzmán faces federal indictments in Chicago and in six other U.S. cities for drug trafficking, money laundering and other crimes, such as homicide.

The U.S. has filed two extradition requests with the Mexican government, which has ruled the requests fulfill the requirements of the extradition treaty. A statement by Mexico’s attorney general’s office said lawyers for Mr. Guzmán filed injunctions against Mr. Guzmán’s extradition during the months he was a fugitive.

A lawyer for Mr. Guzmán, Juan Pablo Badillo, told the Milenio television channel Saturday that his client cannot and should not be extradited “because he is Mexican and Mexico has wise laws and a fair constitution.”

I’m kind of surprised that El Chapo hasn’t turned up blue and not breathing in his cell.

“Mexico has wise laws and a fair constitution” Oh, absolutely!

So wise and fair that a major narco mafia guy was able to bribe his way out of the same prison where is right now-and if his lawyer can buy enough time against extradition, he will be out again, and out of the country-and the reach of the laws of two countries-this time...

I agree that he should be sent to the supermax in Colorado-he won’t be bribing his way out of there...

I have a question for a lawyer that is familiar with extradition laws.

There are many nations that do not have extradition treaties with the United States. Why did he stay in Mexico? Or, perhaps he is so toxic even those nations would give him up to the United States or Mexico?

If you know the laws please post.

“”Wouldn’t that be expel?””

Yes - the headline makes no sense - the US seeks to extradite him - not Mexico...It appears everyone else is asleep here.

Perhaps he should be given to one of the families that had innocent victims of his violence and genocide of all that stood in his way. More than than one couragous reporter died

The Chihuahuan desert is big and give much solitude for those do do good work.
