Experts: Cruz Citizenship 'Not an Issue' in Current Presidential Race
WOAI ^ | 1/8/16 | WOAI

With John McCain now stepping in and agreeing with Donald Trump that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) may be in trouble in his Presidential run because he was born in Canada, Texas constitutional law scholar Gerald Treece says it is time to end the silliness and move on, saying there is no doubt that Cruz, who was born in Canada and with a mother who is American and a father who is Cuban is in fact qualified to be President, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Trump is warning of a constitutional challenge by Democrats if Cruz is the Republican nominee. But Treece, who is a professor of constitutional law at the South Texas College of Law, says that challenge wouldn't get very far.

"While there are very few decisions on this," said Treece, pointing out that the U.S. Supreme court has never specifically ruled on what the framers meant when they said the President has to be a 'Natural Born Citizen,' but he says there is plenty of scholarship on the issue.

"There is so much scholarship and it is almost unanimous, that not only is Cruz qualified to be President as a Natural Born Citizen, so is President Obama."

And McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone, and Mitt Romney, whose father was born in Mexico.

Treece says all of this comes from the concerns that people around the world had in the 18th Century about being governed by 'foreigners.'

"What they didn't want in a President was a foreigner, someone coming over here from the dreaded England or the dreaded France and becoming President."

Some judge(s) ought to decide this once and for all.

Day six (?) of Cruz distraction. Whatever his intention, merely by answering a question, Trump has thrown all the Cruzers and even to some degree Cruz himself into a week’s worth of distractions, unfocusing him. If it doesn’t take him off message, it sure took the media off his message.

A guy from Texas supports Texas Senator Cruz? Nice!! I guess this issue is settled.

Maybe. But on a more positive note, it has also distracted the media from covering any Republican candidate who isn't Cruz or Trump.

I think that is a very good development for those who are supporting either Cruz or Trump.

DISCLOSURE: I am a Cruz supporter, but will vote for Trump if he wins the nomination. I won't vote for any other candidate (not that it matters anyway, since my state will go for Hillary or Bernie no matter what the rest of the country does.)

I know that if I was Cruz and half my support was open to supporting another candidate, I’d also be pretty worried about someone introducing such doubts among my softer supporters.

Cruz is a “natural born” citizen of Canada, not the U.S.

If a person could be “natural born” of two countries the clause wouldn’t have been put in the Constitution. It was put there to weed out possibilities of foreign influence.

Like being married to a Slovenian?

“Experts: Cruz Citizenship ‘Not an Issue’ in Current Presidential Race”

LOL! Ok then...

If it’s not, then let it sit and ignore it, and wait for the the Dems and press to make it one.

“Experts”. More like expert idiots. The Cruz camp would be fools to listen to these people.

Saw John (Psycho) McCain with Fox News yesterday afternoon - I think he was frothing at the mouth talking about Cruz. Ted and Donald are living rent free in the little brains of the elite and driving them crazy. I love it!

The matter needs to be decided in court otherwise it’s just back and forth conjecture. We don’t need this. After Obama I can see why people might think it doesn’t matter but that should not be the case.

It matters not what legal experts say. What does Trump say?

After all he says he’s really really really really smart. Then he must be.

Why he went to the Wharton School of Business, inherited his slumlord father’s money, stole property and built a fortune.

He’s so smart he knows more than legal experts.

Some judge(s) ought to decide this once and for all.

Because you believe once a judge decides something, no one every debates the topic again?

Have you heard of abortion?

The fact there is so many articles and TV on this means it is an issue.

At the beginning I said I would vote Trump if he’s the candidate. It’s going to be hard.

The nonsense he spouts and the insane way he is defended by people who should know better makes me think it’s a mistake for him to be the nominee at all.

Now that you are done with your tantrum.

Did all of that talk from these “experts” magically make this go away? No? Has a court cleared this away definitively? No?

Ok, then. Like I said, the Cruz people would be FOOLS to just let this sit because someone said “no biggie”.

If you guys dont care, then that’s just the gun you hold to your heads, because the Dems aren’t going to care how many “experts” you get to write blog posts.
