House Republicans reached out to GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson in 2014 about replacing John Boehner as Speaker of the House, Carson told The Hill on Thursday.
"They were looking for an alternative, they were looking for someone strong and courageous who might really be able to add some spine and some backbone," Carson said. "I was very flattered that there were several members that thought I'd fit the bill very well, but I think it played out correctly the way that it did."
There is no rule stipulating that the Speaker be a member of the House.

Get Tom Delay back.
I cannot believe that congressmen could be that dumb.
The Hill....
Apparently, his belt blocked it in time to run for president instead...
One or two might have asked as an aside, but I doubt any Republicans were seriously pursuing Carson to replace Boehner.
I like Carson but he’s not enough of a hard ass for the job...much like the previous and current Speaker.
Oh for f*cks sake!
Just let the dems have the place at this point.
Wait! This is satire, right? Oh. Wait again. It’s Ben Carson, the same guy who supposedly turned down a full ride to West Point. So naturally Ben would turn down the second position of succession for the Presidency instead of a near-zero chance of being the elected to President.
Wow...major LOL!
This is an issue that the the House needed to bring up with the states imo. But corrupt lawmakers probably like to keep possible oversights by the Founding States found in the Constitution secret.
If the Speaker is not an elected member of the House, then that person should not have a vote imo.
They were looking for some putty to mold.
What are your thoughts on Limbaugh?
There's no rule stipulating that the Speaker needs to be breathing, how about Calvin Coolidge?
Yes, that is correct.
Typically the Speaker does not vote.
I don’t believe a word of this.
The general public didn’t even know who Ben Carson was in 2014, and he certainly didn’t have the slightest idea of how the House functions.
