Britain's Health Care: So Bad, Doctors Don't Even Want To Practice There
IBD ^ | 01/06/2016

Angry over pay and working conditions, British doctors are threatening to go on strike next week. This is the sort of disaster that can happen only when physicians are government employees. As many as 37,000 "junior doctors, or doctors in training who represent just over half of all doctors in the National Health Service," Reuters reports, have said "they would stage a 24-hour stoppage next week, followed by two further 48-hour strikes."

A walkout of disgruntled doctors, the first in Great Britain since 1975, would affect nonemergency care and cause surgeries to be canceled, leaving many Brits, who rely on government health care, to go untreated. Of course, going without treatment is already part of the British health care experience. The National Health Service is a broken system in need of an overhaul. It can't continue as is. The threatened strike is one of many signs that foundational change is needed, but doctor dissatisfaction is not new to the National Health Service. Britain's resource-challenged socialized medicine has been chasing away doctors for years.

A little more than three years ago, the Financial Times reported, "(The) National Health Service is suffering a 'brain drain' of doctors as more medics trained at taxpayers' expense choose to pursue their careers overseas." From 2008 to 2012, more than 8,000 doctors left Britain. The Financial Times said that they had grown tired of working "extensive 'goodwill hours' and coming in on days off." Younger doctors were feeling they had been "abused by the long hours" they put in.

Actually, the physician flight is almost as old as the system itself.

If they don’t like working for the gov, can they still set up a private practice if they choose?

I would bet that the doctors flight to countries outside England is composed of Third World peoples coming to the U.S. Of A. There are going to be at least two tiers of physicians top notch European doctors for the rich and politically connected and Third World incompetents for the rest of us.

RE: If they don’t like working for the gov, can they still set up a private practice if they choose?

I asked the same questions to our Canadian friends. The answer in Canada is essentially “no” ( otherwise, why do people bother to come to the USA to get the treatment they need if they don;t want to wait? ).

I am not sure what the answer to the question is in the UK...

It all began at the end of WWII when the socialists took over a ruined the nation. Things continued on in black and white until Margaret Thatcher came on scene. Now the ‘moderates’ are in the driver’s seat once again and most of us here know that they stand for nothing. England is having a bad economic time and they’re importing Muslims who stink like Limburger cheese.

The UK is set up for a big fall!

So is the US.

As long as citizens stand by and watch Obama and the UN gather America under their fold and to dictate what we should and should not do, then we’re ripe for losing America.

The tip as to what would ensue was the war against the incandescent bulb. Our complicit Congress stood idly by and signed on to that little piece of treachery.

The answer is yes, apparently. But it appears to have the whazoo regulated out of it. The implication of the article below is that they also must work for the government medical system.

The walkout will result in fewer deaths.
This has been proven in past strikes.

After WWII the socialists/gays and anti everything good, bastards took over the UK.

They have pushed PCism to the max. Maggie Thatcher, stalled it while she was in office. Since then, they have taken guns away from the average citizen and kept their street cops unarmed.

They have welcomed Muslims with open arms with welfare, free rent, free medical care and allowed them to set up no go zones in London and other areas.

The UK is falling apart and will inherit the violence/raping of innocent Brits, that is going on in Europe.

They refuse to face what they have done to their country and hate Trump for his exposure to the world, what has happened to the UK since Churchill left.

Yes. Look up ‘Harley Street doctors’. That is the street in London where many of the high flight private doctors have their practices.

Maybe Monty Python was onto something here.

When the government owns what you produce, you are a slave.

“If they don€™t like working for the gov, can they still set up a private practice if they choose?”

I think you have to fulfill a certain amount of ‘public’ practice hours each day or week, and ‘private’ patient hours come after this.

Very definitely yes. In fact many doctors practise both privately and for the NHS. Their ability to do so has been a constant since the NHS started in 1948 - it was one of the concessions the British Medical Association (doctors' professional body) extracted from Nye Bevan, the Health Minister, to secure their cooperation with the new service. For the first 30 years of the NHS private practice was small, but it has expanded significantly in recent decades.

Only if they’re contracted to the NHS. They can work entirely in private practice of they so choose, although that’s relatively uncommon.

1—Bad guns aside, we still own guns. And the UK has always been a minority gun public. So bad laws aside, most people dont own guns.

2—Our beat cops have always been non-gun armed, and both police and public support this. We don’t want nor need an all armed police force. The preferred option is more armed units. And more arms training for police officers. We have dealt with terrorism for decades with the IRA, and the police weren’t all armed. I odnt see the Islamic terror changing this. As to ‘normal crime’, the level of crime and violent crime in the UK dosent warrant it. Our murder numbers and gun crime are a fraction of the US, even allowing for pop difference.

3—We are not falling part, or will we fall. We have serious issues, but we will prevail.

The socialist took over a bomb hit and exhausted country, they offered a New Jerusalem with new and better housing, healthcare and standard of life. Much as a conservative as I am, the early postwar socialists did a good job of building the UK back up. BUT it would their 60s successors that started the rot. Socially and economically.

As to economy, we aren’t perfect, but are in frankly a better situation than the US.
