Trump: Cruz "didn't give me credit" for border wall idea
CBS ^ | 1/6/16 | Staff

Posted on 01/06/2016 6:01:35 AM PST by VinL

Donald Trump, who credits himself for bringing the issue of illegal immigration to the forefront...is complaining that... Ted Cruz hasn't given him due credit for his proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

"The other day I heard Ted Cruz say we're going to have a border, we're going to have a wall," Trump told MSNBC on Wednesday. "It's the first one I've heard!"

"Finally, somebody's coming around," he said. "I give him credit for that. But he didn't give me credit."

It was a grievance Trump has been airing since Sunday, ...{Cruz is] "trying to step up his whole game on amnesty and on illegal immigration." He also called Cruz's stance on immigration "actually quite weak." ...

He's been working on these things a long time and long before Donald Trump announced his candidacy," ... Rick Tyler told Politico. "We are glad that Donald Trump announced his candidacy and we are glad that Donald Trump brought a lot of attention to these issues, but it is not true to suggest that he's not been thinking about these issues and working on them for a long time."

In fact, Cruz's recent rally around a border fence isn't the first time the senator has mentioned it.

When Cruz came out with his immigration platform in November, his first listed priority was to secure the border by building "a wall that works" along the U.S.-Mexico border.

And as far back as 2012, while engaged in a primary competition for his current Senate seat, Cruz told voters during a debate that "we have an illegal immigration crisis and we have to do everything humanly possible to secure the border -- that means fences, that means walls."...

He's been working on these things a long time and long before Donald Trump...

Many of us said at the time when Trump went after Carson on a personal level, it was bad politics. Carson, unqualified to be President, was nonetheless a conservative with allied supporters against the establishment. They are now in the anybody but Trump group.

Yesterday, Trump attacked Cruz on a deeply personal level. Again, all Trump accomplishes is to alienate the conservative anti establishment folks, and increase the anybody but Trump majority.

Trump continues to cede the nomination to Cruz.

"Trump continues to cede the nomination to Cruz."

LOL, sit back, watch, and marvel.

The moron of course knows that it wasn't his idea in the first place, that Cruz was proposing a wall when he was hosting a reality show.

Cruz has been very consistent regarding securing our border, as a Texas primary voter when he was elected, I can remember it being brought up during the election.

Trump is just a blow hard. I’m certain he thinks he is the greatest gift God has given the earth, and all ideas he comes up with are the best.

Securing the border is hardly something new... Why on earth would Cruz give credit to Trump for an idea which does not even belong to Trump...?

In this case, Trump is full of it and sounds like a whiney, petulant child. While there have been “fences” along parts of the US Mexican border for years, Congress first funded construction of a wall - the Secure Fence Act of 2006 (Public Law 109–367) - in October of 2006 and Cruz supported it. I don’t recall Trump calling for a wall 10 years ago...

Good point. The sorry thing, though, is he could win. The people have itching ears. Con men are good at scratching itches.

NO HE DOES NOT!

If Cruz had been ‘talking about, or working on this for a long time’
....it obviously didn’t resonate as it did when Trump said, loud and clear

I WILL BUILD THIS WALL AND MEXICO WILL PAY FOR IT

And Trump has all the flak he caught to prove it!

Here is an article from May 2013. Cruz has been pushing for the fence to be completed under federal law since his senate campaign.

Sen. Ted Cruz's border-security amendment to immigration legislation voted down"

This is another reason why Cruz is hated....

DuncanHunter ‘pushed’ for a fence, and even got the financials to do it.
It was never done!

Cruz’s “jumped the shark” remark and this from Trump are irritants to those of us who just want good leadership in the WH.

The nomination is going to be between the two of them and I guess it’s just a fantasy that both of them could tell us how they would handle any given situation were it their call rather than this Jr High crap.

Just to a search for the word wall.

Dewhurst couldn’t stand the idea... Cruz of course was pushing for it... Well before Mr. Trump...

You really think Trump is going to get Mexico to pay for a wall? How is he going to do that?

I do not think Trump is ceding anything.

The idea of a fence on the border is not new, and it did not originate with Trump. He is just calling it a wall.

The Congress voted to build the fence along the southern border under the Bush administration. It was called the “Secure Fence Act” and was passed 283-138 on September 14, 2006 in the House, and on September 29, 2006, it passed in the Senate 80 19. It was signed into law by President Bush in November of 2006.

It authorized DHL to build 700 miles of fence along with many other surveillance and technology initiatives.

Problem is...the feckless Congress never followed through and actually funded it to built it.

When DH was running for Prez, I wanted to vote for him in the primary but he was out of the race by the time we got to vote here in AZ. We nominated McCain, who for the likes of me I can’t understand his existence if we are supposed to be a red state.

Cruz said he would be willing to see federal taxpayers absorb a $7 billion hit to pay for building an 1,100-mile-long border wall from Brownsville to El Paso.

“I don’t know the specific cost, but I can guarantee you it’s far less than the cost of illegal immigration,” he said.

In final debate, Cruz, Dewhurst trade jabs on conservative credentials, taxes

Yeah, sorry, Trump is correct on this. Cruz mentioned the wall in passing and without saying anything about Trump. That’s what’s bad politics, here

Actually, Cruz is a Texas senator. The illegal immigration situation in Texas is so ridiculous. San Antonio is going to be a Spanish speaking only. Americans are so stupid on this they think you can have a bilingual area. No the Hispanics have no intention of learning English And English only cannot get jobs. If they have a job it’s different. They’re grandfathered in they cannot Get a job

Cruz is in charge of that along with all Texas government

He is NOT good on immigration
Nor will he be

I like to go to Breitbart and defend Cruz from Trump people.
They actually call me, a Cruz supporter, a “troll!”
On Breitbart!
They were all happy about the latest NBC poll until I reminded them about the internals.
I told them Trump has a good lead on Cruz overall, but he only has a 5% advantage with the “very conservative” aka TEA Party.
And the TEA Party will decide the nomination!
They hissyfited.

I WILL BUILD THIS WALL AND MEXICO WILL PAY FOR IT

You do understand that the American consumer will pay for it by higher prices for manufactured goods? Don't you?

Or do you believe that Americans will accept Mexican level wages?

Or that American corporations will sacrifice their profits?

Or do you indeed believe that Mexico will write a check: "Pay to the order of: The United States of America"

memo: Wall
