Civilian Jets An 'Easy Target' For IS Missiles
Sky News ^ | January 6, 2016 | Unattributed

Exclusive footage obtained by Sky News reveals IS terrorists have the technical know-how to reactivate surface-to-air missiles.

The former head of the RAF has said evidence uncovered by Sky News of Islamic State recommissioning surface-to-air missiles is of great concern and that passenger planes would be an easy target.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Graydon was responding to exclusive footage which revealed the extremists were able to produce homemade thermal batteries for heat-seeking missiles - a feat that has eluded terror groups until now.

It raises the possibility of the militants being able to reactivate discarded stockpiles of older missiles, previously thought redundant.

The capability of the insurgents emerged in more than eight hours of unedited training videos shot at a jihadi 'weapons lab' in the IS stronghold of Raqqa.

Sir Michael said of the footage obtained by Sky News: "It does appear to be an intelligence gold mine.

"The thing that particularly got my attention was the possibility that they would be able to get their hands on old surface-to-air missiles and insert this thermal battery which would make it very concerning indeed.

"And there are an awful lot of these old missiles around the place, of course.

"These would not necessarily be of great use in Iraq and Syria but in wider Europe and one's immediate concern would be towards civilian airliners.

Pretty amazing that the Israelis installed ECM against this sort of thing years ago...

EL AL Airlines and other Israeli carriers took this seriously starting in the 1980’s.

Once again the world asks for their expertise after vilifying her for years...

When we wake up one morning and the news is 6 or 7 airliners have been shot down by Isis missiles, the societal meltdown is going to be something to behold

I never guessed that “dead battery” = “demilitarized”...

Who knew?

What a brilliant strategy.

I wonder if these are the Stinger missiles left over from the Soviet Afghan war. I remember the heat seeking batteries died years ago, that the CIA funded and supplied to the Mujahideen (now Al Qaeda) years ago. Raetheon made them. 600 were unaccounted for when the Soviets left. The media reported about the dead batteries in them.

Doubt it, Saudi Arabia has been giving a ton of manpads to a jihadi group called the “islamic front” which is allied with al nusra the al qaeda front in syria,

Islamic Front is a huge force in syria with 45000-70000 fighters who are on saudi payroll who are allied with al qaeda, dont you think they might share some of those manpads the saudis give them with nusra ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Front_%28Syria%29

Of course the white house and most politicans(including republicans)will ever talk about them that might offended our “allies” the saudis.

Yes
Our stupidity in arming these groups is alarming.
Wasn't it suspected a large number of shoulder fired SAMs were 'lost' in the Libya revolt?

Invite lots of foreign muslims to our schools of higher education and teach them physics, chemistry, computer technology, engineering etc etc. Because they are state supported and pay much higher rates and spend money around college towns like drunk sailors. Then send them home or better still give them jobs here. What could go wrong?

I think it was Lennon that said that we would sell them the rope that they would hang us with.

Lennon: “Love is all you need”
Lenin: “The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.”

Very doubtful TwA wasn’t shot down by a missile and it certainly wasn’t shot down by a MANPADS.
