I did not see the news story, I read a CNN web story that said:
hicago (CNN)Hundreds of police officers at one of the country's busiest airports say in the case of an active shooter, they are instructed to run and hide. That's because these officers are unique among the nation's major airports: They don't carry guns.

It says the only armed officers there are from Chicago PD. Its is CNN though.

If I understood correctly, Chicago itself provides armed police officers in numbers comparable to other airports (I believe they used Atlanta and LA for comparison, as those three are the largest).
